Or has it become a complete ghetto?
I mean, I always though of RI has a wealthy, refined state with gobs of history, etc. But I saw an episode of COPS that made it look like an epic slum. Just wondering.. |

My grandfather retired from the U of RI as a pharmacology professor and as a Texas resident still spends summers there.
Providence is pretty much a shithole-western half of the state is mostly rural woods. Decent beaches, but they love to gouge non-locals for parking fees between Memorial and Labor Day. Couldn't imagine actually living there year round due to overpriced real estate, at best mediocre schools, and high taxes. The robber baron "summer cottages" in Newport are pretty cool to visit on a day trip. |
| I can't speak to the slummy areas, but my family took a road trip through New England when I was a kid, and we did the Newport mansion touristy stuff. Holy hell those places are huge! And fancy! Being something of a hayseed to start with, I felt like we'd just cruised in on the turnip wagon and were getting our poor-people dirt all over the insides of these places. |

Just wondering.. If we all formed our opinions of states from watching Cops, we'd think the entire country was an epic slum. RI isn't bad, it has good areas and bad areas just like any other state. It's government is very corrupt, though. Gee, just like all the other states. |

Just wondering.. Don't think you should base an opinion of a whole state based on an episode of COPS. But that said: Definitely not wealthy, at least not anymore...taxes are creeping up and (I think) are higher than Taxachussetts in most cases. Those with the means or no ties are leaving. They can't attract businesses and mention tax cuts and you'll be publicly flogged. Blue state for sure. Politicians as crooked as question marks. Real estate costs are high too like most built up areas of the NE. Still lots of history and lots of nice places in the state, particularly South County. Despite its faults, it'll still hold a special place in my heart. Grew up here. I still live in the same town I grew up in. But the state isn't moving in the right direction and if it continues I might have to cut ties and scoot. |

Ordered by the federal government to move to New England; I picked RI over CT stickily to avoid CT AWB garbage. RI's CWP is farce however, I got a non-resident CT permit within two weeks of application. (both the Mrs and I)
Overall not a bad place, my wife will leave me however if I ask for an extension of my tour. NH or back to the south would be fine for her. |

ah, I love Rhode Island in the warm weather months and autumn. gorgeous beaches. if you are a saltwater angler, there is no place like it in the world. ![]() CCW is doable (not easy, but doable). no silly AWB or magazine bans. no NFA, however. an hour's drive from Boston ... 3 hours to NYC. |

Just wondering.. Why don't you get out of the house and go there instead of basing your opinion off a TV show? I saw a COPs show on El Paso. Where is the thread––-"What is Texas like? I saw it on TV and it looks like a slum full of Mexicans." Although the part in red is pretty close to the truth. I'm not from RI, but have been there. Rhode Island, just like any other state has its good places and bad places. Places like Newport, Cranston, Warwick, NP, CF, Pawtucket, aren't the best. Other places aren't too bad. |

It's obvious you don't live there. And yes, I have lived there. |

Or has it become a complete ghetto?. I'm sure if I judged your state by TV show that featured cops nailing crooks I'd be a little ![]() ![]() , too. No offense, but that's not the best way to research a state.....
RI has a fairly low crime rate, most murders occur in Providence, Pawtucket, Central Falls and involve minority gang members. Property crime, robbery, etc are not prevelant. The schools are OK, some suck, some don't. Outside of the city most are pretty decent. We are still heavily forested, even the neighborhoods have plenty of trees (just look at the satellite view on the maps via Bing.com). We have killer beaches, great fishing, and my friends from Vermont come here to deer hunt because there is less pressure on the animals, plus we can get something like 7 or 8 a year if we are able. Not a perfect state, but few are. If you are from here you usually have two degrees of seperation from anyone else from here, which can be a blessing or a curse. Most of our houses have basements and two floors, too. If only western Connecticut would secede and join us..... |

The statement about it being like little CT is pretty close. For some reason there's this belief that all of CT is like Greenwich and Wilton and I guess some people assume RI is all like Newport or that even MA is somewhere between Cheers and Wings.
RI doesn't have Bridgeport or Hartford levels of ghetto, but there are some less desireable parts and the state is generally known for being the most corrupt place outside of Chicago. However, overall,it's no not really any worse than any other state. If COPS were anything to go by,there are only 9 white people still alive in Florida and everyone in CA has either recently stolen a truck or is a methamphetamine enthusiast. |

I wouldn't touch Newport with a 10 foot pole. While Newport and CF are certainly not comparable, Newport has it's own class of sleaziness reverberating through the town. I think it's a combination of the rich people and the tourists. Pascoag, Foster, and the area around URI are where it is at for good living. |

Hey Rhode Island has some things to brag about.
For one, it has the longest bridge in the world, the washington bridge. It stretches from west providence all the way to portugal. Rhode Island also sports the famous North Providence High School, known as "Da High School" You can gamble at jai lai You can see if former govenor Pete duprete (AKA the Gerber Baby, because of his cow lick hair) is still in jail. and last but not least, you must have a New York systems hot dog. Think of a chili like meat sauce with no beans that has nothing to do with new york. Dont ask, its a rhode island thing. |
