Any good?

Really looking towards DVR and the NFL and NHL packages.  Looks better than the local cable companies, but I've only used the local guys.

2 years here, and hands down better than dish. Haven't had any issues and customer service isn't to bad.

Love it in the desert. If you live in a thunderstorm prone area, you can have outages rarely.

If I'm reading the website correct, for the first 12 months the ultimate package is ~$40-45, but its nearly $80 for the second year?

EDIT -  just noticed i have dish... not direct... whatever.. still better than att and time warner

had it for a few months now... friggin love it so far... +$3 a month and now i get the outdoor channels....
only thing i dont like is that every few days at 1:11am the units do some update thing and then shut off... i sleep with the tv on so this is annoying but then again if you dont sleep with the tv then who cares...

a nice bonus is that prettymuch every other weekend is a "free preview" weekend of some movie channel... if you dvr movies from the free previews they still work after the preview has ended...

remotes are oddly shaped.. they sorta feel backwards and are too smooth but a lil stippling or a bit of rough grit sandpaper makes it a nonissue..

DirecTv is the best,  Love the errant weird channels that come up like in the 2000's there is the Chinese run state media News Network in English.  Interesting

Had it for several years and love it. Changing my Mom to it now. They have a great package deal going for the next 4 days.

ETA: If you have a friend with Directv, get their acct number and you both will het $10 off your bill for 10 months. I'll give you mine if you don't have a friend!

You should still be able to sign up. It takes a bit for them to ship equipment and get it installed!

Its good

I would stick with cable though.  The shit works, has all the channels, and delivers superior internet on one bill.

Will I be the first to say save $100 if you're referred by a friend? I'll be your huckleberry.

I have no complaints with directv.

If you have a friends acct number when (if) you sign up everybody wins. Shoot me an IM and I'll share. (I win too)

We had it for about ten years until they double billed us. Even sent them a copy of the cancelled check as proof of payment and they still insisted we owed them for that month.
We changed too Dish and have been happy. We still get the "We want you back" notices. They get trashed.

DirectTV is absolutely the best if you like sports. You can't beat NHL Center Ice and NFL Sunday Ticket. HD is great - however I will say that the satellite can and does go out on occasion during heavy rains or snows. Customer service has been great for me too.

I love Direct TV!  Swtiched from Cox to Comast to Direct TV and wished I had done it sooner.  When I originally signed up they included the NFL package for free for that season, amazing!   Also if you give them a friend's account number when you sign up you get an additional $10 off for $10 months, and so does your friend.  If you need an account number here's mine, feel free to save an extra $100.  63747102

As for service, with comcast I was on the phone with them literally once a month to resolve issues, ie.e billing, channels out, etc...

My main concern with satellite was if we would have issues with reception due to weather and all.  We live in an area with torrential storms and downpours, and we never have issues with watching whatever we want.  It's been 2.5 years now for us ... do it.

10+ year subscriber...  Fantastic.

Be sure they mount your dish at ground level, as opposed to somewhere inaccessible, because accumulated snow will jack it up.  Also, make sure trees will not grow into the line of sight.

It's great for the 1st year.  I have a mid-level package and it was $45/month.  2nd year rolled around and it went to $95/month.  Now it's up to $103/month and goes up every few months...I'm going to give them a call one day and threaten to quit and I'm pretty sure they'll lower it or give me something free.

Love DTV's programming, HATE their customer service.  On install the installer grounded the system to a hot wire, subsequently frying both my TVs.  Took 2 months, pictures, and me finally getting another provider before they agreed to pay for a "fix", they wouldn't even buy my new TVs.  Maybe I will go back in a few years, but not now.

20+ years and no complaints

Almost 20 years with a 2 week try of Time Warner (back in '00) and a 1 year, 1 week try of Dish.  I would have switched the day my 1 year contract was up but it was raining.  TW's guide on the box sucked and I see no improvement when I check out friends with cable.  Dish sucked worse.  The absolute biggest waste of my money back in '99/'00.  Back when you bought equipment, I dropped some big money for their first high def receiver with the promise of all kinds of software upgrades.  Delays after delays.  Then on a Charlie Chat (where Charles Ergen, the CEO talks directly to customers) it was announced that the high def receiver I bought didn't have enough memory for any upgrades.  At the same time, the first DVR they had ended up sucking so bad it was part of a class action lawsuit.

DirecTV's current lineup of equipment is great.  I have two DVRs networked so they share recordings and I can watch recordings on my PC.  Both are controlled by a Harmony 880 remote so I don't even have to pick up a new remote to switch receivers.  I could probably get the same features as well as an extra tuner (5 instead of the 4 I have) with the Genie but I don't want to give up my local recording ability on my HR-20.

Some may complain about their customer service.  Everyone has horrible service reps and DirecTV is no different.  I only talk to them when it is 100% necessary.  Like the after I wired my two receivers into my home network, I had to call to activate that feature.  They wanted to schedule someone to come out and connect everything for $99.  I told them I had already done it and just activate it.  They said I couldn't do that.  I told them I did and just activate it.  After going up 2 manager levels, I finally got someone to activate it but there is a note in my account that they will not troubleshoot any network issues for me.  Awesome, because I wouldn't call them anyway.

Had it for 15 years until some large trees in my only satelite path finally got in the way of the signal.  Loved it during those years.  I have cable now and would go back to DirectTV if there was any way short of a tornado taking those trees down.  Only downside is once you leave them the junk mail from them never stops even after 5 plus years.  I am talking weekly letters begging you to come back.  I had to buy my system back in those days at a cost of nearly $2500.

I prefer DISH, but, you can't get the packages you want I think.

I'm just not going to pay that much.

Comcast did their typical customer service with my office, so I had DirectTV installed Friday - I used my son's info to get us both a discount.

Next, I'm going to refer my house from my office and boot Comcast TV out of there.

I absolutely love how Comcast's attitude changes when you show up with equipment to return, and make that final disconnect phone call.  I get to do it again this week.

I hate getting used to a new remote - does someone sell a DTV remote that isn't... like upside down?

I've had DirecTv since 95. Love it. Would never have anything else.

Oldest Brother has Dish. The way it's set up seems kind of fucked for watching shows in different rooms.

As for NFL. DirecTv gave me the full package free last year for Life but I don't watch Pro Football.

Trying to get them to switch it to Cricket or College Football.

I install both. DirecTV is the only way to go if you're in to hockey, baseball, NASCAR, or football.

The only thing Dish has is NFL Redzone (doesn't even touch Sunday Ticket), and PAC12 if you're in to college ball.

I had Cox cable for YEARS (since i was 16 and paid for cable tv and internet myself).  I switched to Direct about 2 years ago (when i was 29) and MAN... i wish i did earlier.  Direct is SO much better.

I've had DirecTV since 1997, and only went without it for 2 weeks last year when they were in negotiations with Viacom. I went with digital cable during that period and it was AWFUL. The picture quality of DirecTV smokes digital cable easily. If you aren't under their 2 year contract you can call them and get your price lowered in 5 minutes. When you call immediately ask for 'retentions', tell them the price is too high and you are thinking of switching to Dish Network. I got my bill dropped from $95 to $60 per month for 2 years.

DTV is great when the power goes off.
Fire up the generator and continue to receive satellite signals.

In my area Time Warner dies within an hour after power is lost.

Got my Mom DirecTv back in 08. Called them this year and asked what they could do about her bill? Cut $20 a month off of it and sent her a Debit card for $250. Profit.

btw; I pay her bill

Just got it a couple months ago after having cable for about 10 years.
The new Genie setup is AWESOME. Very comparable to TiVo in terms of functionality, but you don't have to worry about transferring shows between units since it has a centralized DVR unit. The clients are slightly slower to button inputs than the main DVR, but it's not enough to get wound up about.

Go for it.
