CHAPPELL -- The Deuel County sheriff was hospitalized after a shooting Friday in Chappell.
The Nebraska State Patrol said its SWAT team was called about 2 p.m. MST after shots were fired at Sheriff Jeffrey Ortgies from a residence in Chappell.
Ortgies was taken to a Sidney hospital with gunshot wounds to the upper body. The patrol said his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
The man inside the house, Charlie Warnick, 35, of Chappell, was believed to be suicidal. He was alone in the house.
After another shot was fired from inside the house, SWAT team members entered and found Warnick inside with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was flown to the Sidney hospital.
Neither man's condition was released Friday night.
