Okay guys there is alot of specualtion and myths that surrounds the USA and the geneva convention so lets clear a few of the questions up. 1.) Is the USA a member of the geneva convention? 2.) If we are not a member, are our uniformed soldiers required to obey the convention? 3.) Regardless of or geneva convention status, are our non uniformed soldiers (aka. blackwater and various defence contractors) required to obey the geneva convention. Feel free to add any other info you think will help clear up some of the confusion. |
Because we are better people than them. Come back with all the witty comments you want it is the truth in most cases. |
| There are several "Geneva Conventions". The most commonly referred to are those that were codified shortly after WWII that concern the treatment of troops, civilians, and the like. There was a 1977 extension of the Geneva Convention to guerillia warfare that the US is not a signatory to. |

1) Yes. 2) N/A. 3) Yes. Of course, none of this applies against an enemy who does not recognize the Geneva Conventions. From the GCTPW: (highlighting mine)
The Convention was written in a saner time (1949), and makes provisions for just the sort of conflict we are in right now. |
| The geneva Convention is bullocks. It's all about power and who wins a war. Even if say our troops violated the geneva convention do you think they would be tried in a european court? HA! Unless the US is totally defeated like Germany was there is 0% chance. Look at Vietnam, Were any of the north vietnamese ever tried for war crimes for treatment of US pows?? No. Why? Well the answer is obvious. |
