Can you guys point me to a decent disk imaging application?  I want something where you can just plug in an external USB hard drive, boot from a CD, and do the backup and restore from there.  I've been using Ghost, but you cannot backup without booting into windows.  Their bootable disk is only good for restoring.  I'd like something that just images the disk, and does not care what kind of operating system or software you have installed.

Clonezilla is awesome.  Check out Macrium Reflect Free as well...

I just tried Clonezilla.  It was complicated, but it worked.  Thanks for the suggestion.  I think I will try TrueImage next, I would be willing to pay for decent GUI.

Can anyone confirm that TrueImage can do a bare metal backup?  I know it can do the recovery, but not too sure about the backup.

I've used TI to load a new larger drive with an image I took from another HDD.  No problems at all.  Booted from the CD and selected my options.  Took a while but found it pretty straightforward.

+1. Use this all the time for restoring my pc back to a certain spot and for deploying computer labs at my clients.

TrueImage can image the OS partition while Windows is running.

Looks like Clonezilla might be just what I need to upgrade the hard drive in my Linux laptop.

Check the CloneZilla docs first to make sure that you can use it to clone one disk to a larger disk.

FWIW, I use it in my lab to make backups of a bunch of test boxes that may get various programs installed on them, that I want to restore to a known, good state.  Also useful for making images of different OSes for the same hardware for testing.  E.g. sometimes apps need to be tested on XP with IE6 or Vista with IE7 or IE8.  I keep a directory full of images on a fileserver and pull down an appropriate one as needed/  CloneZilla works well for this and you cannot beat the price.

I use trueimage. With the 2010 version they brought in the universal restore as an option(have to buy the addon) that the business version has had for a while. This allows you to restore a hard drive image to another computer. I've tried it a few times and it has worked for me.

Will do. Thx.
