I'm typing a research paper for college and I was wondering if any LEO could provide examples of ongoing heavy debates within police departments. Example: if marijuana should be legal or not. Im not asking for you to state your side, just what are some good examples. Thanks.

The only debates I remember centered around overtime and where to eat lunch. No one gave a shit about doper topics or even politics in general.

While most officers I know have personal views on policy issues, but by and large we don't talk about them much, if at all, at work.  I find it a bit inappropriate to do so, in fact, given that we are a part of the executive branch of government, and really should not dabble much in legislative matters except on a purely personal level.

Being from WI, I have a pretty relevant one for you regarding the Milwaukee Chief of Police's policy of not pursuing criminals in vehicles that run from the cops ( no-chase policy). After about 7pm or so tonight, download the Mark Belling show podcast. He had a pretty good interview with Flynn on it today.

This looks good. Is this a fact that this is a debated topic in wisco police dept. or just a assumption?

WI as a whole, no. It's been an issue within the Milwaukee PD.  A year or two ago the Chief enacted a no-chase policy and over the last year, stolen vehicles have spiked since all they have to do is speed away and not get chased. There have been several deaths in recent months and several MKE cops have expressed frustration. Probably lots of stuff out there on it if you run some searches. Belling is still talking about if now if you tune into WISN 1130am. You can listen on their website and he posts his podcast around 7pm.

Flynn goes into a lot of numbers in the interview. Just go on and on and on in your paper about numbers, facts, blah blah blah. Take 1/2 the paper to talk about 1 side of the issue and the other 3 1/2 pages on the other side. Break it down by a few points each and stretch it for a page. Should a be easy.

Good luck.

You want an easy debate-

Is it more fiscally responsible to pay officers more and demand more qualified applicants

OR

Is it more reasonable to pay officers less, have more officers, and expect to pay more in lawsuits

Yep.  My serious answer to you was going to be chase policies.

Added:  I remember being told when I first got on the street in 97 that after the department tightened up the pursuit policy several years before, a cop tried to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation, but since it didn't stop, they had to terminate the pursuit.  They got the plate, so they went to the registered owner's address, only to find the owner had been murdered and the car stolen.  Admittedly, this has urban legend written all over it, but I could see it happening.

Now it's to the point that we are better off shooting the driver before he gets it in gear.

We have argued it out about constitutional carry some, but I mostly bludgeoned the anti's into silence by pointing out the stupidity of their arguments.  I also got some new members for the WVCDL that way.

Otherwise?  Not much debate.
