We've seen them and participated in them. Abortion, evolution/creation, freemasonry, and on and on... With these debates that go on for 10+ pages, have any of you been swayed to change your opinion based on the arguments presented? For the most part, I haven't. I avoid debating a topic unless I've studied it. I tend to be an observer with subjects that I'm not fairly well read on. Like Clint said, "A man's gotta know his limitations." |
If your opinions are swayed after reading an internet message board, your opinions were probably not well thought out to begin with... |
No. You would have to be a complete jellyfish to let some guy on the Gun Board change your view on serious social issues! However, I have at times found the debates to be an excellent way to blow off steam and hone my debating skills. |

TheCynic beat me to it. They are interesting sometimes though just because-well frankly I never would have thought that there were people Without Arfkom I would never have bothered to read up on things like "Creationism" and "The Founding Father's Quotes on Religion" lol Edit-I am starting to lean toward agreeing that Old Painless is right that working the charging handle after a tactical reload is better than slapping the mag release with the flat of your hand (I've been practicing both ways) so it's not like I never learned anything |
Well praise the Lord. Seriously, I have changed my mind and seen other's changed. I've had people IM me to tell me they have had their opinions changed due to reading long arguments on certain subjects. As I've said before, I used to feel that felons, after serving their sentences, should not have the right to own firearms. But someone argued that the Second Amendment is an "unalienable" right, given by God. That is true, so, I changed my opinion and now believe that after serving their sentences, an ex-felon has as "unalienable" right to possess a firearm. Who says an old dog can't learn new tricks. |
I agree, but thats because my AR will FTF half of the time if I just slap the release. |

Damn, that would be funny, I am sooooo glad it never happened! I woudl feel like a fool! |
What debate, other than the roll going over or the roll going under? |
Was the memory traumatic enough that you blocked it out? |
Could be, something like Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. I'll take your word for it./ Shamefully; that is. |
The last debate was a draw. |
Oh, that one, I didn't ignore the argument, I just ignored it. Really. |
| I think that the problem with some of the debates is that people try to sway you from a viewpoint that you hold dear and would never change. In turn, you might get a little defensive or wholly pissed off. I know at times I might get a little peeved at a person that I might overwise like and respect. So, as a rule I try to avoid those debates though I find myself suckered in at times. |

Healthy debate is always a good thing, but when two or more people start butting heads in a web forum, it usually goes down hill fast. Was it here or somewhere else where someone posted a photoshopped pic with the following phrase: "Arguing on the internet is like running a race in the Special Olympics. Even if you win you are still a retard." I thought that was one of the truest and funniest web forum posts I've seen in a very long time. |
I have very strong opinions about many things, and they are mostly based on facts and/or logic. If not facts, they are based on my own experience, which unfortunately I can't use to prove the validity of my beliefs to another person. Therefore I can't imagine anything changing my stance on those issues. But if someone shows me a good reason to question them, I try to be open-minded about it. Of course, that doesn't happen much.
