They showed the wreck. He pulled the chutes and the left tire came apart. That took out the wing. The car then broke apart he hit the wall backwards. The cockpit was full of flames. I knew it was not good. I am surprised they showed the wreck. It was tape delay and could have taken it out. When Blane Johnson died at Indy they showed it only once because it was live. They never showed it after that. |
I watched the 2nd airing of the race (9p-11p) and saw the wreck. Looked bad and when there was no word right away I knew there wasn't going to be any good news. I really liked Darrell Russell, heck, he spells his first name same as I do, ya' got to love that. I'm a big NHRA fan and when they anounced that he'd died I went numb then started to cry. I don't think alot of people fully appreciate the risk these guys take to put on a show for us fans. I pray that God is with the Russell family and will give them comfort in that Darrell died doing something that he truly loved to do. I'm glad that I didn't see the wreck. I've seen more than enough fatal wrecks at races, I've seen the drivers die, I've seen workers die. I make sure that when I watch the 1994 San Marino GP replay I skip over Sennas crash. I watched it happen on the CBC broadcast of that race and it was horrible. |
