I'm looking for some good (and free) software for ripping DVDs for Windows. Does anyone know what the best tool is? |
|
DVDDecrypter to rip the VOBs to your hard drive AutoGK to encode them to AVI. I just did my whole DVD collection this last week, all 500GB of it.. if you don't have a top of the line PC, be prepared to devote a lot of CPU time to the endeavor. |

| To rip DVDShrink to write DVD Decrypter both free. Don't waste money buying any software to do this. I've used almost all of them and these are the only two you need. You can also try DVD43 which decrypts in the background. It also is free. With DVD43 you will need to install the Patin-Couffin access layer on your computer before installing DVD43 on your computer also free at Afterdawn |

not that I'd condone the use of such things keygen.us/pg/D/13.shtml

there's also an older version that is free. options are a bit different but it works fine www.mrbass.org/dvdfab/ |
I'll 2nd DVDdecrypter & DVD Shrink - DVDdecrypter is also perfect for burning the final images. Other items you may need are: IMGTool to create the burnable DVD iso/img file Ifoedit - can be used to remove unwanted items before running DVD Shrink. To get the tools - to get help / tutorials - visit Doom9 |
And DVD Shrink will let you make a "Spanned Backup" onto 2 DVD 4.7 Discs. |

The latest version of DVD Shrink both decodes, rips and compresses DVD's ready to burn to a blank DVD using Nero (anything else is shit and a waste of time). Use DVD Decrypter to rip DVDs without the compression. DVD XCopy is no longer a "real" product, 123 Studios went broke due to legal concerns. If you buy a copy you are buying a pirated copy. You are a chump if you buy it. |
DVDXCopy is a good and easy program to use, but the company that made it is no longer in business. So that means their activation servers are no longer running and you can't call them for the activation code. Unless you know how to artificially activate a new install, you're screwed. Also, if you have a copy that is currently running and you don't know how to artificially activate it, be careful not to loose it or uninstall it. I also recommend DVD Shrink. |

If you have a "real" copy of DVD X Copy and have your original activation code and password the registration server is still working. I read that a company bought DVD X Copy's assets and they have set up shop overseas. www.dvdxcopy.com/

DVDDecrypter will copy the DVD to your HD as VOBs or as an ISO Image. DVD Shrink can then be used to shrink most ISOs below 4.7GB. I've only run into 1 DVD that wouldn't quite go below 4.7GB with DVD Shrink's normal compression. I removed the French Audio/Subtitles and that did it. The resulting ISOs can then be burned to a Blank DVD using DVDDecrypter. The DVD should have all the functionality of the original, unless you specifically removed that functionalilty (subtitles, etc...) or "reauthored" it. You can "reauthor" a DVD (change the order of videos, remove ADs/Trailers, etc...) but then the menus won't work anymore. You should be able to remove subtitles/audio tracks without messing up the menus, though. You could probably fit 2-9GB Discs onto 1-4.7GB Disc if you "reauthored" and removed all the trailers, ADs, Directors' Commentary, Subtitles, Alternative Audio Tracks, etc... I can't help you with converting it to AVI, though. But, I wired my DVD Player into an old VCR, and then ran the VCR to a video capture card on my computer. That way I can record directly onto my computer (I use MPEG in DVD Low, which is about 1GB for 2 HRs of video) from any VHS or DVD. I've recorded so many shows on/into my computer, I've used up most of my 2nd (13GB) and 3rd (250GB) Hard Drives. I guess I'll have to start burning some more stuff to DVDs. Either that or buy a 4th HD. |
