I just got this external DVD burner but Windows doesn't recognize the the DVD-RW disk.

Any suggestions?

You need a seperate program to burn DVD's like Nero for example.

Is there anything on the disc?

You have to have the correct disk. If you buy the wrong disk  it wont work with the drive. The burner should have come with a program for burning (albeit shitty one) and an installation disk to recognize the external burner.  You know you could have avoided all this mess if you had just bought a mac, right?

Also there are + and - DVD's.  Make sure that your burner can burn on both.

try using Nero, it has a free trial
winXP can do CDs natively but not blank dvds
I've also found that, in win98se at least, a blank dvd is detected as an audio cd by the window's autoplay, and then the cd player gets an error that there isn't an audio cd in the drive
