Anybody done or have this done with good results? Cost, time, quality? Cons?
We're buying a house and we don't like the countertops in our kitchen, but I'm not replacing them until we overhaul the kitchen, including changing the layout. Just looking for something to appease the SO's taste that will hold us over for a couple years until we take on the whole overhaul. Im a handy man, done a bit of everything, make my living in the solar PV trade, but I've never done this. Thanks |

I made my counter tops out of concrete that I stained black. 18' of counter space with a sink in it cost me about $350. Looks pretty good. The only thing that I would change is that I would have liked the sink to be under the counter top to make it deeper and make some lead in ramps to drain pots and vegetables back into the sink.
Can't put up any pictures because my home PC died and I'm using my work laptop now. |

We were in the same position that it sounds like you are in when we bought our house a couple of years ago. We resurfaced ours with stone texture paint and polyurethane. It cost around $100 to do all our counters and in the end the results were pretty good. There is a lot of prep work and don't try to take shortcuts. Go heavy on the polyurethane and avoid putting hot items on the counters at least for the first few months.
Here's an example of how we did ours: http://www.oldtownhome.com/2011/11/3/Quick-Kitchen-Counter-Update---With-Textured-Spray-Paint/ FWIW, I'm pretty sure this is the same end product as the Rustoleum kits for less money. All in all I'm happy with the results as a long-term temporary solution if that makes sense. Someday I'd like to redo the whole thing but until then these look way better than what was there to begin with. |
