If you're like me, hitting your kids isn't an option
for punishment, which means that you must get
creative.
So what kinds of things have you come up with to
punish your kids?

In our house there's a small circle drawn on a wall
in the kitchen. They're given a penny and a set
amount of time. They must hold said penny within
the circle for the time given, if the penny moves
outside of the circle the time starts over.

The other one they dread is having to hold their
shoes at arms length, shoulder high for a set
amount of time.  Shoes drop too low, time starts
over.

What sort of punishment do the hives children
suffer?

First warning - time out
Second warning - waterboarding

My mother used to let me go pick the switch she was going to beat me with. Worked out pretty well until I brought her a 2x4 log. Then she got a horse whip.

Opposed to physical punishment.  Thinks mild torture is appropriate.

I have three 6 year olds that are used to having free-run of the ranch.  Punishment is making them stay in their bedroom (their toys are in the "toy room").  Nothing in the bedrooms but furniture.

30min later, you'd think I'd beaten them with a rubber hose.  It's very effective...at least for now.  We'll see how it goes when they get older.

^ I find it very odd as well.

I care for my 7 year nephew and making him sit in the corner and not move or speak for 5 minutes is still working.
If he moves or speaks the timer starts over. When he really goes off the deep end I take away his "mine craft" and that makes him lose his F'ing mind.

Since I have no kids of my own, and can't beat my girlfriends kids (even though I want to). I make them write when they need corrected. If they are disrespectful they write, I will not disrespect adults 50 times. If penmanship is poor, I let them finish then throw it away and make them start over. My mom did this too me when I got too big for beatings. It is the worse punishment I dealt with growing up.

first offense=verbal warning
second offense=time out=number of minutes will be equivalent to the age of child, example 5 year old =5 minutes in time out.
third offense=time out with holding small weights in the hands above the head.
fourth offense=privileges taken away, time out, and weight.

I don't have kids but I've kind of thought about it.

I think I'd make the kid run X amount of distance in under X amount of time or do it again. Pretty much I think I'd be all about the PT punishment.

I work with my brother and one day he called saying he would be late coming in. He arrived an hour late and I asked him what was wrong.

Seems my brother was cooking breakfast when his boy, 5yo at the time,  walked into the kitchen and peed in the trash can. After a lecture on why you don't pee in trash cans, they had a gold old fashioned GI party. The boy got the job of scrubbing the trash can clean. Then the boy got to do it a second time because dad wasn't sure that they were clean enough.

I had to do that some in middle school (and in high school, in Detention).

In middle school, the teacher had this set of "rules of conduct" that George Washington was supposed to have written for himself. You'd have to write each of them X times for her, with the number increasing according to the severity of your fuckup.

In detention, the teacher who ran it had a set of encyclopedias, and you'd have to spend the full hour copying. If he caught you slipping, or thought you'd been slacking, he'd give you another detention.

In chemistry in high school, I got a lab detention for fucking around during a lab, and I had to wash all the glassware from all the day's classes after school. It wasn't so bad, but I think practical punishments might be counterproductive - if a task is interesting, it's not punishment, and if the task is necessary, you're making a counterproductive association between a necessity and punishment.

When my brother told me the story he was laughing, at the time of the incident my brother wasn't seeing the humor in it.

My two children told me not long ago how they despised "Time Out". An hour sitting in a little chair facing a corner.

I took a hairbrush to the oldest one's bottom once for carving her initials in a bed but usually a good was all it took to set things right. They both turned out fine.

Based upon my observations of 99% of people in public, you do nothing while they scream and holler but get super offended if anyone asks you to do something about it.

I have a 13 year old. I haven't spanked her since she was 9. Though I have got in her face, and scared her. I do believe this. Now I just take things away that she really enjoys. I really hate spanking, but I was raised up that, that is the only way. I think taking things away is working. Only thing that could get ugly is when she disrespects her mom or a teacher. Those I hold no tolerance for.

In my house it's situational. For instance the other day my almost 12 yr old  stepson kept sagging his pants like a retard. After explaining to him that hes a white kid from the suburbs and he looks like an ass. He was informed that one more time and he gets to wear one of his sisters skirts the next time we go out in public.

If you're a religious person, do you think it's wise to make reading the most important book there is a punishment? It seems like a good way to make somebody hate that book.

My older boy (13 now) is on high honor roll, has been since he was old enough to be on it.  Good kid, athlete.

He has had a few screw-ups.  Lied once or twice, mouthed off to his mom, that sort of thing.  Each time I feel it is a bad enough offense,
he gets a load of stone (limestone #1's) and a shovel, and my driveway gets longer. As he gets older the size of the pile increases. He got two yards last time.

Hasn't screwed up in a while.

I agree on half this. But I think improving a necessity through punishment is better than a beating. Which is not a option for a non parent figure. My gf's oldest is a problem child. He has no fear of adults. I honestly think a good old fashion ass whopping would cure him, but its not a option for me. So creative punishment is my only option. Writing is his weak point. It bothers him to sit and do it correctly. Taking stuff away has no effect on this kid. He can stand in a corner for a hour and it has no effect. Eta he is 12 to give you a idea of age.
I'd be open for punishment ideas if you have any?
Link Posted: 4/24/2014 4:48:31 PM EDT
I was spanked (often) growing up, and have no problem spanking my daughter if it is deserved. She also gets her hand slapped, made to sit down in her chair with no toys, and stand in the corner.

Will keep some of these other punishment options in mind for later on.
