As someone who has worked graveyard and swing shift only for the last 3 or 4 years, I'm contemplating going to the dark side.
I may give day shift a try. Any advice from the night shift people of arf? |
| Fuck day shift. So much unnecessary flail and stress. Also if I'm on days that most likely means one of the shitbag coworkers who already manages to dodge significant amounts of work with all the bosses around wanted to go to nights in order to do absolutely ZERO and shift even more of the load to the like, two of us who aren't a big bag of cocks. |

Did 10p-7a 3rds for 5 years. Switched to day shift and never will I do the vampire shift again.
I always felt like crap, never had energy, never felt rested, constant burning eyes, etc... That all changed with getting on a proper sleep pattern. It's been 10 years, and aside from the occassional overnighter or 2 to be present for maintainance, I will never subject myself to that again. |

Its hard, but trust me, after the first day of getting up at 0430, you wont have a hard time going to sleep at 2000 the next day!
Best advice I can offer for a continual basis- When I worked mids, and I always encouraged those who worked memids to do this- keep your schedule close on your days off to what you do on your days on. Same applies for dayshift If you get up at 0430 on your workdays, get up at 0700 at the latest on your day off. Even if you are tempted to stay up real late, dont unless it is a social event (party, wedding etc). I am in bed by 2100 on my days on and 2200 days off. Keeping your schedule 'routine' will help your body adjust. |

Keeping your schedule 'routine' will help your body adjust. Now my day shift is 5:30am-4pm. Wake up at 3:30am and go to bed at 8pm. I fucking hate it, and need 7 alarms to make sure I hear one of them. Then on the weekends I usually fall into my more "natural pattern". Stay up until 5am and wake up around 2pm. Sunday night I typically don't sleep to help switch back for the week. |

In my line of work 1st shift has 87% more hand-wringing mangement around with nothing else to do than pester working crafts and create shit-shows. I don't think I will go off 2nd or 3rd shifts even when I have the senority to hold it. I got so much more work got done on 2nd and 3rd shift when I didn't have to play silly games at the bosses' behest and was just left alone to work. |
| Oh and when you're night shift, everything was day shifts fault for not doing anything because they were "too busy". When you're day shift, everything is night shifts fault because they're "too lazy" and didn't finish everything they needed to. Just the way it is ;) |
