I'm wanting to get an audio setup for my iMac.  I could just get a Logitech 5.1 system or something like that, but I want to do it differently.

The iMac's audio output is either stereo or optical, and I've got a spare Onkyo receiver with an optical input that I can use.

My only problem with that is the size of the receiver, and the heat that it puts off.

Is there a small amp, or something similar, with an optical input and 2.1(or better) sound?  And that doesn't put off too much heat?

I'm hoping to keep this a little inexpensive if I can.

Why is the heat emission of concern to you?

Because I don't like sitting next to a heater.

I've already got 4 computers and a server in that room, I'd like to keep any additional heat down to a minimum.

How about buying a most excellent headphone amp and a superb set of headphones to go with it?  That is a small set up whose sound quality will exceed anything you can put in the room, itself.

No heat, either.  [img]http://www.ar15.com/images/smilies/icon_smile_big.gif[/img

While I'd never discourage anyone from owning a nice set of cans, those headphone amps reek of a solution in search of a problem.

LOL!

Perhaps, but they offer a money back warranty if not satisfied.  The thing is, his iMac may not have enough "juice" to run the "cans".  If that's true, the amp will solve that problem for him.
