Any ideas on how to speed it up?  It's not just the internet connection, it's opening other programs as well.  I've closed everything I'm not using, run SmitRem, Disk Defrag and Disk Cleanup, deleted temporary internet files, and disabled all startup programs.  I'm not sure what else to do.

I see that there are a ton of processes running when I open Windows Task Manager.  What can I close without degrading my system?

Thanks for any info.

In the task manager, which apps are using the most % of CPU time?

When was the last time you rebooted?

Also, how much memory is being used, and how much do you have total?

Task Manager ––> Performance

What OS are you running?  What is your CPU type and speed?

You can ALWAYS blame these things on the porn!  I'm fond of the ol' reformat and start fresh approach.

Try running spybot

Also what antivirus are you running?   Norton?  Get rid of it and download avg or avast.

Stop downloading porn.

Are you using AVAST, AVG, etc?

I also run RegistryFix from time to time to clean up my registry. The first time you run it might give you a big boost.

MSCONFIG, turn off stuff you don't need.
Scan with good Antivirus.
If XP, use Event Viewer and see if an error or conflict is the cause.
Boot to safe mode, run CCleaner.

No joy....as stated by NathanJK, reformat the C partition and reload windows.  Sometimes the only way to be sure is to nuke it from orbit.

EDIT TO ADD:  Mind you, I'm posting this without knowing anything of your machine and OS.  Post more details and we can provide more specific guidance.  Also you might want to repost this in the "Urban Commandos" forum, power users tend to lurk there.

I have more porn on my PC than exists in some small countries.  My PC runs great.  It all depends on how you get it.

Um, I mean, um, hey look over there!

That's what happens when you try to download a scale image of my genitals.

Type msconfig in the run command and shutdown services that you don't need to have running at startup.

If you're running Norton, shitcan that beast.

I removed it from the computers at my work and my wife's at home and they all had very noticable improvements in performance.

In addition to the above. Go to IE, pull down the tools->internet and delete your internet files (the cache). Then defrag the disk.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm running AVG 8.0 right now, and I deleted a bunch of programs, movies, and other stuff taking up space that I didn't need.  I'm seeing a slight improvement so far, and I'll keep deleting more stuff and check out the YouTube videos as well.

That makes me wonder how much virtual memory and actual memory you have available.  Let us know your config.

Recommend you click "start", right click on "my computer", "properties", "advanced", Performance "settings", then play with the settings on "Visual Performance", and on the "advanced" tab you can change your processor priority, memory usage, and vary the size of your virtual ram.  You might find these helpful in speeding up your system.

Go here http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscareper.html and download their Advanced Windows Care - it's free.  Run it and you'll be able to customize your startup as well as remove tons of useless junk clogging your system.  Follow up with a defrag.
