Every now and then I'll try to load a web page and an "Install on Demand" box will appear that's tells me I need to load Java Virtual Machine.  So far I have not.

What is it, and why do I apparently need it but not have it?

Should I just find it, download it, and install it?

Thanks...

You dont want micosofts version of java.  Get the sun version.

The JVM is not Internet Explorer specific.  The same websites that need Java for Internet Explorer will need it for Firefox or whatever browser you use.  As a matter of fact Java is not Windows specific.  It's needed for browsers of any Operating System if you wish to browse  Java enabled sites.

I do agree, your best bet is to use the Sun version of java rather than the Microsoft version.

Er, no, MS specifically pulled it out of IE, so now you have to go and get the install manually. I forget whether they did it becuase of a legal action, or just some sort of spite. Anyway, just go and get it from sun, it'll be fairly easy to find from te URL's given so far.

I totally agree .  Of course Internet Explorer isn't even an option for me as a Linux user even if I wanted it which I don't.  IE basically hasn't significantly changed since version 5.0.  Many of the newer browsers out there are faster and less vulnerable to a host of security issues.  It amazes me that so few people use anything but that which is already installed by default on their computers.

My advice to anyone who will listen is to try Firefox.  You won't go back to IE.

jVM no longer exists. the sun version does not work the same way apparently. i have several business apps for work that do not work with the new sun release for IE. It is forcing me to use my laptop with an old load of 2000 and that is a royal pain in the ass.
