I unpacked my gaming PC last night after several months and a couple of moves.  I brought it out to play through S.T.A.L.K.E.R. before buying the new sequel that just came out.  I played for a couple of hours last night and about an hour this morning when the system completely crashed in the middle of a game.  When I reboot I can't even go into Safe Mode, the screen stays blank and the tower emits a loud beep.

The system was not hooked up to an internet connection, no new programs were installed or anything like that either.  Any ideas?

Check to see if your CPU fan is where it should be.  Sounds to me like the CPU is overheating.

ETA: It definitely sounds like a hardware problem.

Does it POST? Can you hit the BIOS?

Beep codes

eta: "Screen stays blank" means the answers to my questions are moot. My guess: vidya card blowed up. Drop an old one in to see if you can get it to boot.

Hardware problem.  Crack it open and make sure all the cards and cables are still seated properly.  Glance over your memory too.  Is it a single continuous beep or what?

check your fans. see if they turn when the power comes on.  check the board to make sure it is getting power.  reseat the ram just to be safe.  if you get absolutely nothing then i am inclinded to think its your video.  do you have onboard video you could try to change to?  how many beeps were there?

The beep is in a 25 second on, 5 second off pattern.  Both fans seem to be running fine.  I tugged on the cards a little bit but that's about the extent of my hardware troubleshooting ability at this point.

Definately figure out your motherboard manufacturer and model and then go the the manufacturer's website for a listing of BIOS beep codes to figure out the problem.  If you bought the computer not too long ago, you should find a motherboard booklet itself or at least a system spec. readout of your motherboard.

Not just yet, but check the BIOS beep codes first, but if you touch anything in the computer, make sure its unplugged from the wall and that you touch the metal case first to ground yourself.  Static electricity that you can't even feel, will kill a part.

Oh yeah.  Well, that is a good start, since heat can cause things to move.

Gods be Praised!

It appears to be working fine now.  I thought I heard a very slight click when reseating one of the cards inside, maybe that did it.

I'll update if there are any more problems.  Thanks for all the info and advice, everyone.
