Is it possible to install a program to a folder on the desktop, even when you are not given the option to select the directory?

I want to install World of Tanks but I don't have admin rights.

Not that I know of.

I want to install World of Tanks but I don't have admin rights.

Looks like you're SOL. Any time you try to open any kind of executable (exe, msi, java ect) it's going to check to see if the program is already registered on the PC as an installed file.

If you don't have admin rights, you aren't supposed to install software.

I can install things that let me choose where to install them.

For example, the amazon downloader or mozilla

You need to create a "portable" version with something like ThinApp.  I've got portable versions of MS Office, Photoshop, Firefox, and others that I keep on a thumbdrive and I can just plug it into any Windows PC and run the apps I need.  Works great!

Brilliant!  I thought about installing windows on an external HD and booting the computer from the external HD but then I wouldn't be able to access the internet.  I will have to try your suggestion.

The installation location is controlled by the installer programmer.  If it does not give you an Option, then you are SOL.

Does the installer give you the option of Typical or Custom install?

If so, you can usually set the install path under the Custom option.

You can actually give the Lowly User the right to install programs on Windows even though it is not a good Idea.

Of course you *can*.  Why anyone *would* is beyond me.  Configuration control.

Why would I get fired?

We (me and the others like me) are power users.  We can do basically anything on the computers except change anything not in our user file.  If the installer doesn't let you choose the directory, then it has to add folders to C:\program files and I'm not allowed to do that so it won't install.

I don't think I'd be breaking any ToS

Power users only have a few more access rights than standard users.  If your IT department made you a power user, they probably don't want you installing stuff.
