My laptop with Windows ten is not booting up.  Tried f8 ...still can't get in.
It's at the Dell start up screen with the little circle thing spinning forever.
No CD or DVD drive to reinstall even if I had the software.

Wise asses gtfo.

I had this happen to a desktop at work.

After many minutes of fucking around, I powered it down for 10 minutes.

Booted up fine, like nothing had happened.

If it's a Dell, there should be a recovery partition that you can boot to. You can then re-install the OS, but it will be the OS that you had when you bought the computer and it will erase everything.

Which Dell is it? Was it working before on Win10? What was the most significant change you can think of between the last time it worked and now?

Can you get to recovery with F12? Can you hit ctrl+alt+d to run the Dell Diags?

Sounds like a hardware failure.  Windows will lock up waiting on failed hardware.  Try taking the battery out for a few minutes and then reinstall and restart.  If that doesn't work then you will have to pay the Indian guy.

P.S. If it was a desktop then I would suggest changing the motherboard battery, but Laptops are much more delicate and harder to get into.  You will probably end up paying the Indian guy.

You can get a thumb drive and load ubuntu on it to boot from and copy your data to an external USB drive, possibly the same thumb drive you're booting to.

How long have you let it sit spinning?

Does it have a removable battery?  If so, unplug it from AC power, flip it over, take the battery out, flip it back over, open the lid and hold the power button down for 30 seconds.  Put the battery back in, plug it in and try booting it.

If it still won't boot let Startup Repair run at least 3 times, then run hardware diagnostics on it.

Do you have another working computer?  You can remove the hard drive of the broken laptop and buy a USB drive caddy to plug it into the working computer.  You could at least get your data off that way.

Tried win10 'resetting' option with boot USB drive.   It's hanging on 10 percent.

I would pull the drive, connect it to another PC, pull the data, then force a reformat.

Yep, thats best way to get the data.  Also, depending on which screen it's locked at (not familiar with your computers startup) some hardware component may be fried.

Assuming the drive works, will the win10 file system and files be readable on another win10 machine?

If the drive is otherwise functional? Almost certainly.

Pretty much all Windows file systems are NTFS after XP.  So yes, it would be readable, but just connecting the drive, even if it was FAT32, I'm pretty sure Win10 would be fine. Its booting to another file system that would be the issue.

Edit: I should add, the drive has to be able to spin up if its mechanical. If its mechanical and doesn't spin, all is still not lost, but it gets wildly expensive in that case. Cost me $800.00 a few years back for a dead drive salvage.

Good luck, hope it works out. On a side note, get a back up drive for these situations. Like a 128GB USB3 flash drive or a 1TB USB3.0 drive. The 128 is cheap and easy. I've got both, but I have like 5 of the 128 USB3 drives as well.

Mostly cell phone pics and videos.  I don't like using online services.

I do a system image backup after every major Windows update.

Heck, a month ago I rebuilt a whole new system from ground up using Windows 7

Use Firefox Synch and your bookmarks are automatically backed up.

All data like docs, pics, music, etc are on external drives and won't get lost if the main computer dies

Update...

So I removed the hard drive and was able to grab the important files I needed with the sabrent USB adapter.

How do I reinstall windows 10 without any media?

As "old school" as this sounds, I'd put my money on a dislodged memory stick. I've had this happen on a Dell Laptop fairly recently. Try reseating the memory.

Seems to be installing now.  For some reason it required a reformatIng of the installation partition.

Also, unplug anything connect to it ( USB devices, SD cards, yadda yadda, external disks)
