Do they make a case to turn an internal device into an external one? Something like a DVD burner or a hard drive? Something that could then plug into a USB port or something?

yes, I just bought a case to turn an extra laptop hard drive into a USB2 external drive.

they have same for hard drives and I'm sure somone makes one for a CDROm. They are relatively inexpensive.
