I'm on a new laptop and tried watching a clip on Windows Media Player. The color are all psychedelic like: looks like an infrared heat image with bright reds, greens and yellows.

WTF can I do to turn the image back to normal?

Try going up to the tool menu, drop it down and choose options, then go to the performance tab and turn off the video acceleration.
