And first off. I already did the power cycle thing that I commonly see in IT threads.

My laptop has been running like shit for a good while now. So I did the whole reset to factory default thing per MS 8 guidelines. Anyways. It's not any better than before. I finally figured out how to pull up the Task Manager even. And i'm finding that the main CPU/Memory drain is due to Windows Modules Installer Wor.., with a close race between Google Crome running.

What are my options here? The only programs I've downloaded since the reset are Avast and Google Chrome.

This will take care of 90% of most common issues related to a dogging laptop.
Pull up the cmd screen and run these things.

chkdsk /f

it will ask to reboot, say yes, will take 10-15 min.

when windows is back up pull up the cmd screen again and run

sfc /scannow

if it cant fix everything, run it again. Usually 2-3 times is the most you will have to run it.

once those are done run a drive cleanup using the one built into windows and then defragment the hard drive.

If it is still dogging

do a chkdsk /r  this will take about 1-2hrs but will physically check the hdd and map out any bad sectors.

You can also download a SMART test program from your hdd's manufacuter and run that, it will test the hdd and see if it is going bad.

I am not a fan of any registry cleaners.. I use those as a last ditch effort before I reimage or re-install/repair install windows.

How did you do the reset?  Is it an option within Windows or did you actually format the drive and reinstall the OS?

I don't care for the rollback/system reset options.  Only real way to be sure is to format the drive, install OS on a clean drive then run your updates and reinstall all your programs.

Backup any important files.
Purchase or pirate a copy of whatever OS you have.
Format Hard drive
Re-install OS
Done.
