I had a friend of mine install Windows XP Pro and IE 7, everything is great except there is no sound coming from the speakers, I checked the drivers, it says they are installed but nothing is happening. When I go into help it says everything is installed, but no sound. I think the sound driver is whacked. Little help?

Thanks.

this has solved the problem more times than you can imagine

Downloaded and installed the latest drivers?  What kind of sound card is installed?  Onboard or expansion card?  Did the sound ever work after XP was installed?

Sorry, a lot of questions.

Make sure they're not muted. Look in the bottom-right corner of the screen for the speaker icon.

Other than that (and what DonKey153 said), i dunno what the problem is.

is it the original sound card in your computer?
i had the same problem earlier after reformatting. It showed everything was installed.

i have a sound card in that didn't come with the computer. had to pull the card and get the info and search the web for drivers.

Speakers are on..I think the new IE is'nt working with the old soundcard, it sounds more like what Hanau is saying..what do I do? I tried to downlaod a Dell driver from their site, it downloaded but would'nt take. The computer says the device is working, but it ain't..there is no sound icon on the bottom of the desktop. Anymore ideas? Do I need to take out the old sound card? It says there are Legacy drivers installed, but evidently, they are not working. Ask me anymore questions..

E-95, the sound never worked since the re-install.

Sounds like you have both an onboard Dell sound device and an additional sound card in an expansion slot?  How many speaker and microphone ports do you have on the back of the PC?  Maybe you've got the onboard Dell drivers installed properly but your speakers are plugged into the expansion card and plug & play isn't detecting the additional card?  What OS was running on this PC prior to your XP Pro install?

If what Hanau said is right, you might need to crack the box, find out what additional card you have, and download the drivers for that.

Post a screen shot of your volume controls.

I tried to use different plugs in the back other than where it was. I was running XP before I got the Pro...it would'nt take the new IE7 for some reason so we installed the new Pro. We had everything downloaded after about 2 hours of going over everything. I am a computer retard so I have no idea why the speakers are'nt working, my friend has gone for Christmas and I can't hear guitar videos or anything for that matter.

What do I need to do to re-install a different driver or check the card? This sucks for Christmas eve.

It says there are legacy drivers and the codecs are installed but no go..no volume controls on the desktop or anything. When you go to the legacy driver it says it is not working or no device detected..weird.

Here is the answer  remove the drivers, power down
the puter remove the sound card, power her back up
and reinstall the drivers, then power down again,
install the sound card, restart the machine and
it should then install the drivers to the card by
itself and off you go to boogie on

I had the same problem with the altec lanscing speakers
with XP and also the monsoon speakers with the other dell

Okay, let's start with what model Dell you're working with.  I'll see if I can find a diagram of the back side so we've got a starting point.

2nd, do you know if there is a sound card in an expansion slot on this PC?

3rd, speakers cables should go into green marked plugs.

Dell dimension 3000..speakers are hooked into green slot, I have no idea what soundcard is in. If ya'll want me to open it up, let me know.

you more than likely have a realtek integrated sound solution or the like. (If the plugs are not down where the PCI/etc cards go)

I have ALtec lansing speakers and sub...so maybe this might be the deal. I will attempt what you're suggesting if E-95 can't come up with something better.

What does the soundcard look like when I get the panel off?

It will be where you plug the speakers in.
wow what a hassel it was to find the solution
when I had the problem.
the driver has to be installed before the
card then plug the card and it should resolve the problem
btw are trhey acs or acl 95 speakers?

open box make sure the card you remove is a removable card.

look for manufacture name on card and model number of card.

put card back in
power up and post info here.
or search web for drivers

You really shouldn't have to unplug/replug the card back in (again if you didn't buy an upgraded sounded with your dell, there is around a 99% it is integrated (you cant unplug it (but you might be able to disable it in the bios))

Just uninstalling the drivers (all of them) and rebooting should be good enough.

Yes, there are 4 plug holes at the very bottom. The speakers are plugged into the green one.

Bingo . . . your onboard sound card is disabled due to the additional card and plug & play isn't picking it up.  You need to open the case, identify the card, go to the manufacturer's web site, and download the appropriate drivers.

That all depends.  it may not have a valid certificate even if you get it from a reliable web site.  But as long as I get it from a manufacturer site, I trust it.  If they come from anywhere else . . . . not a chance in hell.  I've spent too many hours digging through the registry, running virus scans, etc. getting rid of shit I and others have downloaded.
