First off...computers are a pain in the ass.

OK...I just bought a 2TB Hitachi SATA HDD, installed it (it's going to be a second drive and not the one with the OS on it) but Win XP does not find it.  The BIOS does list it.  Is this a problem with XP not being able to 'see' such a large drive, my BIOS, or maybe the MoBo?  Drivers needed maybe?

Thanks.

Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management. Then under Storage, find Disk Management. You should see the drive listed there. Right click on it, and I believe the option you want is Initialize.

Is the jumper in the right spot on the hdd?

you probably need to initialize the drive.  Computer Management > Disk Management, initialize or write signature or something like that.  XP should be able to see the large drive.

If the BIOS isn't seeing the drive there is nothing that Windows can do about it.  Go into the BIOS and scroll through all of the options.  See if there is one that lets you enable/disable different SATA ports.  I know on my desktop when I add a SATA drive I have to enable that port and then it bitches when I remove the drive until I disable the port.

The BIOS does see it. Initializing it from Disk Management is the way to go.

Sorry, mis-read it.  You are correct sir.

After you initialize, you may or may not need to partition and format as well.  Can't remember off the top of my head and I'm too lazy to look it up.  Let us know how things go.

A big thank you to all you guys who replied.  I did indeed have to initialize the disk via the administrative tools route.  I always thought that the OS would see the drive;  seems to me that is what used to happen in the days of IDE drives.  I was getting ready to burn NewEgg a new one, let me tell ya!  Anyway, it seems to be running and again thanks.

If his motherboard can't handle a 3 gb/sec transfer rate, he will need to move the jumper to enable 1.5 gb/sec transfer mode...

sata doesn't have jumper like that anymore.  they do have a jumper, but it doesn't affect this.
