Laptop (toshiba satellite with Vista) is not recognizing the DVD drive.
Drive is getting power. I can hear the drive spinning up when I install a DVD, but it is not showing when I go to my computer.
I have tried the control panel, reboot and still nothing. Not even showing up on the device manager.
I need to watch the Magpul ATC DVD and it's driving me insane.
Help

Undo the screw that holds the drive in place.
Pull unit out. Reboot. power down
Put unit back in and reboot. See if "new hardware found" pops up.

Vista and Magpul in the same computer..........this is a common problem.

Your disk drive has given up on you.  It has suffered long and hard with your retarded Vista operating system.  Now you feed it a pile of Magpul.  It refuses to take anymore of your shit.  It will spin wildly and refuse to be recognized by your device manager.  Check behind your couch, disk drive has crawled behind it and left you a turd.

Upgrade to Windows 7 and discard offending disc.  Apologize to your disc drive and promise you'll go back to your donkey bukkake collection.

I plugged it in while booted up and nada.

I searched the interwebs and tried a few other tricks...deleted filters in the registry, ran a restore file.  I can't update the driver because it isn't recognizing the drive exists

If it was working and now it just aint, no known changes, it's probably just a tits up drive.

They're cheap.

Delete the device driver in device manager, restart.

Probably won't do jack and it is probably dead, but worth a shot.

Time to find a new drive on fleabay!

Happened to my daughter's Dell laptop. Drive just died. New one was under $20 (IIRC) on Ebay.

It could be the Motherboard, If so I would buy an External USB drive.

Could be motherboard, drive cable, or software at this point.

So I bought an external USB DVD drive from newegg and my computer won't even recognize it.
I tried all 4 USB ports and nothing
The USB ports are working...I uploading some pics from my camera with them today.
Is is possible that this is a software issue? I went to the DVD drive manufacturers website to install a driver but there isn't one available.
Still banging my head against the wall!  Magpul DVD will have to wait

ETA: Got the USB DVD/ROM to work. Had to plug in both USB cables....at least I can watch the ATC now!
