I am not a computer person so i would appreciate any feed back on what notebook would be a better computer. I plan on using it to surf the web, watch an occasional DVD and maybe light gaming if it will play any first person shooter games.

Both are comparable and will deliver near identicle performance in the tasks you set out. The Compaq does have a larger screen, but the HP has a better video chipset. I'd wager that the bigger screen is worth more then the few extra fps the better GPU will get you.

I'd probably go with the compaq, all else being equal. But you didn't mention size, cost, bundled extras etc.
