| Is there any way to copy or burn DVD's with only a CD rewriter? My in-laws seem to think so, but I have never heard of a way. |

www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=27-106-962&DEPA=0 you need something like this to burn a dvd. and dvd decrypter and shrink dvd help as well. |
Yes there is, it's called vcd & svcd. You need dvd software like dvd ripper & it takes multiple cd's to hold one dvd movie. You're better off dropping $70 on a dvd burner. |
But you don't end up with a DVD when your done, just a vcd. I can't get them to believe me. |
Yes that is correct you can copy a DVD to a CD-R with a CD-R writer... BUT the video must be shrunk and greatly recompressed it is a very technical endeavor that takes a lot of time and know how to get right (a pain in the ass to do) and you still don’t get a DVD disc or DVD quality. There are DVD players on the market that will play CD-Rs with VCD and SVCD video… But that don’t make a CD-R disc a DVD disc. |

You can make vcd, svcd, kvcd, etc with a CD burner, but you can't copy a DVD unless you have at least a DVD-ROM drive to read the DVD with - a CD-ROM ain't gonna read it. There is absolutely no way to burn an actual DVD with a CD Burner either, it must be a DVD burner and must be DVD media. Your in-laws probably read some of the Copy Movies with your CD Burner SPAM that's been going around for over a year. If you have at least a DVD-ROM check out DVD2SVCD, it works really well. |
You both correct to an extent. You do not wind up with a dvd, but you do wind up with something that can be played on most relatively new dvd players. They produce a smaller picture that is comparable with med-hi vhs quality and you usually have about 4-6 cd-born vcd's per dvd movie that you have to swap out to watch the film. Again, investing $70 in a dvd burner is the way to go instead of messing with the vcd/svcd solution. |
