Right now, when I click on a link to a video or mp3 file, windows media player opens up and plays the file. I want to change settings so that when I click on a link to a video of mp3 file, it pops up a box asking me to open or save, and hten when I click save, I want it to open with winamp. How do I change things to make this happen.

It's IE6 and Windows XP.

Start > Settings > Folder Options > File Types > Remove the type of file you wish.

Now, that being typed, XP may be different with this config.

HTH.

Try going to Windows Explorer, clicking on Tools --> Folder Options, then select the File Types tab.  Then find the extension for the files that you want to open or save, then either delete the entry or edit the default action.

the files are already associated with the apropriate apps. eg. when I double click an mp3 file sitting on my desktop, it opens in winamp, as I want. internet explorer however uses windows media player to open mp3 files when I click on an mp3 link on a website.

Goto "Tools", "Internet Options", "Advanced", scroll down to the "multimedia area, and uncheck the boxes that say "play xxxx in web pages." xxx being sounds, videos, etc.

Not sure which box counts for mp3, but probably video as opposed to sounds since I think IE treats MP3's as video files. You'll have to try.

Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder Options-File Types.

Find the type of file and change the program associated with it.

Or you could just download the file to your hard drive, right mouse click on the file and change the program that opens the file using the "opens with" function.

Or open up Windows Media Player, click on tools, click on options, click on file types and uncheck the files associated with the type program.

Open up Winamp and find the options menu and check the files you want to be assoctiated with the program.
