Any recommendations?  Brands to avoid?  Things to look for?  I'd like to scan all of our old family photos, and of course, print things.

Can't speak to this particular model, but I've had good luck with Brother.  Mine's a few year old version of the next model up (5450).

Their initial toner pack lasted me a good year with fairly heavy use.  They're supposedly half charged compared to the refills.  Haven't run out on the refill yet.

At the time I bought it a few years back, they were pretty much the best bang for the buck as far as refills went.

I have a similar Brother model and I'm happy with it, though I print less than 100 pages a year with it.

When you decide... make sure you check out the price of ink and the number of sheets you get.... I order my supplies from these folks.... https://www.cartridgeworld.com/main/

I ended up getting a HP LaserJet Pro 400 and a Neat Scanner.... refills for the printer are a bit over $100, however I can get over 2000 copies.

Same here. I've had an MFC-7820N for 6 years or so, and it's still going strong. Toner is pricey, but it's only just now running out.

It appears those two models do not print in color.  Black & White only.

So far the one I like is the HP ENVY 5530
BestBuy has it on sale for $87 ironically.  I think that price alone is trying to tell me something

Honestly, when you get down to that price point, I pretty much look at it as a disposable.

I've done zero research on that particular model.  The last few I've bought for under $100 came with neutered cartridges that electronically limited the number of pages they would print and the refills cost more than the printer.

I'm not saying that ones does that, but look into it before you buy it.

You're looking at an inkjet printer.

We're recommending laser printers.

Inkjets are notorious for clogging up, and having ridiculously high per-page printing costs.

Lasers aren't.

If ya gotta have color occasionally, go to Kinko's. For everything else, a laser printer is the way to go.

Definitely.  Seems like the ink cartridges are $18.75 (black) and $24.24 (color) from cartridge world.  XL versions are $36 and $38 each.

I honestly don't print too much.  Maybe 20 pages a year.  But that's mainly because our printer is in a different room and is not wireless.  I cannot print from my desktop.  I have to email anything to our laptop and take the computer to the printer.  I would like to print more receipts...I don't print any because of the situation, and let them pile up in my email inbox  But I mainly want it for scanning pictures to my computer (hundreds and hundreds from my childhood, family, etc...)

Ah...makes sense.  I'm not too up-to-date when it comes to the computer world.  Since 90% of most printing is B&W, is there one that is both?  Laser for black, but still has color option?

Honestly, we've never had problems with inkjet printers in the ~12 years that I can remember.  Occasionally the ink would dry up after the printer sat in the closet for a year or more unused

Let me think on it some....maybe I don't need color all that often....

Monochrome laser printer all the way. Get a separate color printer, if you must.

IF I were to get an inkjet, how does this one look?:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/brother-network-ready-wireless-all-in-one-printer-black/8968005.p?id=1218957868339&skuId=8968005

Black cartridges are $3, and will last ~300 pages.
Each color cartridge is separate and replaceable.

One review said that scanning photos wasn't the best though...

How about this idea?  A Brother HL2230 basic laser printer ($60), and a Epson V37 scanner ($60 refurb).  I think the dedicated scanner will give me much better quality photo scans (4800x9600, vs most all-in-one printers 1200x600)

If you can, it's worth getting one with a duplex ADF.  I've been 100% digital since the mid 2000's so the duplex ADF on my Brother has been very helpful whenever I get something in the mail (tax documents, bills, ect) that needs to be scanned and is two sided.

I just bought a Brother MFC-J4320DW.  Yes, it's an inkjet, but ink is cheap enough ($22 for a 1200pg yield, compared to laser $54 for 2600pg yield).

I wanted the option to print color if I wanted.  This printer also has a 2400x2400 scanner compared to most that were 1200x1200 or 1200x600.  It also has a 2yr warranty vs. most others 1yr.

Got it for $100 shipped.  Had points I forgot about from a previous purchase I used...

My recommendation is to buy a printer, and buy a scanner.  Fuck all in ones.
