YES

A lot!

Linux would be just as good as windows if you added $1000 worth of software to windows! [:)]

Mandrake Linux and SUSE Linux are about the most idiot proof OS's to install. Red Hat is not the best, in fact Red Hat is moving all its focus to Enterprise not the home user.

I have tinkered with Mandrake for the past couple of years and its easier to install than Microsoft OS's any day of the week!  In fact, the last time I installed Mandrake it detected devices and installed drivers that Windows doesn't pick up!!  SUSE is going to be getting much better as IBM has backed them also IBM is moving all of its desktops to Linux.

To get Linux and Microsoft to talk to each other on a network you will have use SAMBA in Linux to communicate with Windows via SMB.

I've used Mandrake Linux and can second the posts above. It is easy to install, its probably the best linux distribution for the person used to Windows and it works perfectly on a network with other windows based PCs. Best of all--it's free, which allows you to get off the M$ gravy train, spend more funds on guns and gun goodies.

(I am running Linux and WinXP on my home network right now)

Linux is good for some things, bad for others...

It is superior to Windows for internet browsing (It won't run any spyware or viruses. Konqueror or Netscape are good MSIE-equivalent browsers), software development, and server applications.

Windows comes out ahead for office productivity software (Microsoft or Corel Office) and games (since there are few games for Linux).

All current issue operating systems (which basically splits into Windows or UNIX (MacOS is now UNIX)) are interoperable on a network, they all use TCP/IP to communicate.

As for what version of Linux to use, Red Hat 9 or the spin-off 'Fedora' is my recommendation.

Download the CD images from the internet, burn them and have fun...

Leave room for a small Windows 2000 (or XP if you get a hyper-thread capable Pentium 4 for a CPU) install (~10gb or so) so you can do the few things that Linux doesn't do well...

Both OSes can be put on the same machine fairly easier, although doing Windows first is easier than doing Linux first since the Windows install does not respect other OS installations, whereas the Linux one detects them and allows you to choose on boot up...
