I'm watching movies on my computer with a 2 channel sound sytem. It seems they jack up the special effects sound while the voices are a lot quieter. Any way to adjust for this?

Get yourself a GREAT! set of headphones and don't worry about it.
The Sennheiser HD650 comes to mind.

Check in your DVD player software to see if it has options for downmixing the surround sound to stereo. Or pick the stereo soundtrack in the DVD setup (if you are actually playing a DVD).
