I tried to install my mp3 player onto the computer and now  my computer will only start in safe mode.  I have no other options but shut down, restart and restart in ms dos mode.  I don't know what happened

while booted in safe mode, try to uninstall your mp3 player.

What mp3 player, out of curiosity?

go into safe mode, and do a start, programs, accessories, system tools, system restore.

Restore to a point in time before you installed the MP3 player.

I do not have a system restore option.  My computer used to have a gateway go back option, but I don't have that anymore either :(  It went away with my last hard drive!  any other suggestions????

You can always reformat the hard drive but that sucks.

Quoted:
Safe Mode: go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and see if the software for the MP3 player is in the list.  If it's there, uninstall it and reboot.  If not, you're kind of screwed, because the fix is going to be kind of advanced and in-depth.

When you get it fixed, make sure you enable System Restore (Control Panel, System, System Restore tab) on your boot drive so this isn't a problem again.

Oh, and what brand/model MP3 player?  There may be some known software conflicts and you may need an updated driver.

It's a audiovox mp3 player...and I've looked in add/remove programs and it's not in there :(

boot back into safe mode.  go to control panel.  then sytem.    go to device manager.    under usb  delete any mp3 found.  if there is not one listed there is probably one thats called unknown  it will be listed with a yellow exclamation mark.  remove all of those.  then reboot the system.

sounds like your running 98  are you sure the mp3 is win 98 compatible?

Do you still have the MP3 player attached?

When I first plugged in my IPOD, the same damn thing happened.. Unplug from USB port..

 If its not that...

Its a feature... I am sure soon an upgrade will happen that will completely screw up everything.

I am running 98 2nd edition.  I know the mp3 player is compatable because it's an identical one that I had last year, but broke.  So I got a new one and tried to install it.  I don't know what went wrong after that though.  working on the computer in safe mode REALLY sucks though!

When you reboot into safe menu choose dos mode only and enter scanreg/restore

Thats basically what Gateway Goback did.
