Ok computer guru's I'm sending out a call for help.  My son's computer has some type of virus.  The symptoms are it disabled his virus software (Norton) and disabled his connection to the internet, which is a broadband connection with a 10/100 Ethernet  connection.

Prior to getting the virus, he had his Norton anti virus software on auto update and it  on.

Any ideas where to start?

Step #1 Tell him to stop disabling his anti virus software and looking at porn.

Step #2 Get ad Aware and Spy Bot

Step #3 Run them

Was it SP2 from MickeySoft? I had to ask.

Yeah. Unplug the internet connection, check the processes list for anything unusual, check msconfig for new startup items, don't forget the All Users startup in the documents and settings folder.

This is a basic recommendation that assumes the computer is running windows XP. A bit more information from your end would help alot.

Get adaware and spybot and run them. Kick your kid and tell him never look at porn or open emails from people he doesn't know. That's the fix.

ETA:  He did not have SP2 installed.

I run AVG on my laptop (my primary computer)

However, since we can not connect my son's computer to the internet due to this virus disabling his access to the net it makes it hard to do an update.

I should note on the lower right corner it does show that there is a connection and will send information packets out but none are received.

I'd start by booting in Safe mode and then do like others said, look for tasks in msconfig that shouldn't be there. You should be able to get back on the net that way and update your virus software as well .

Good luck!

Try downloading "stinger" from mcafee. It's a stand alone virus scanner.....

you may need to run it with the computer in safe mode and with system restore turned off..

Sounds like maybe blaster or sasser...both have free tools available for removal.

what proccess does task manager show as running???

do control-alt-delete to bring up task mgr.

If I'm not mistaken you can boot of the norton cd and scan without being in windows, only catch is that if that version on the cd may be to old to detect it.  Most computers built now days are set to boot from a cd if there's one in the driver, right after POST and before it gets into windows loading screen you it should say press any key to boot from cd.  If you have any questions let me know.

Thanks for all the input.  We were able to get my son's computer  up and running, with the help of a program called "PestPatrol".  This program found spyware that Spy Bot and Ad Aware were not able to find.  Amazing how much crap can be on a computer that you don't even know about.

Once again thanks for the  help!
