I am trying to install an OS on a hard drive and the installer can't find the drive to format the drive and install the os. Do i need to put the drive in another computer to format it so the install can find it?

To answer your question, no.

First things first, does the drive show up in the BIOS?

If it can't find the drive than formatting it won't help. What you probably need to do is provide drivers for the drive controller. Alternatively in many BIOSes you have the option to change the SATA port to AHCI and then the OS should see it.

If new hard drive, new motherboard and old OS (win xp) you need to make sure in the BIOS the drive type is set to legacy or IDE mode.  In AHCI (usually default on new boards) you need a driver for it detect during an XP install

Start there.

Do you have another drive to test to see if it shows up in bios?

Check data and power connections, drive jumpers (if applicable).  Doesn't show up in the BIOS, then the installer isn't going to see it either.  Try changing the data cable, and try another power plug on the power supply.

Only if the sata port is set to raid will it behave that way and even then most computers made in the last 3-4 windows will have an "F6" driver built into the OS drivers.

If BIOS doesn't detect the drive then 2 things are the most likely. Your BIOS doesn't support the drive (some have size limitations) or you're missing (or is loose) power or data connections. It's also possible the drive is just dead.

Start with the easy stuff, check the connections. The move on to the more complex things outlined in this thread. Not showing up (at all) in BIOS is a sign of no connectivity at all or a bad drive controller on the disk itself. (could be a bad data cable (unlikely) or not enough juice from the PSW (even more unlikely).

I have another drive that shows up in bios. But that drive can't be used for the OS as it is a large storage drive with things that can't go away on it. I have tried swapping the sata cables on the drives and the os drive did not show but the other drive did

using this cable I was able to plug the drive into another computer and view the drive. So i don't think the drive is bad.

Are your primary/slave jumpers correct?

I don't know. Do you have a good link that would show me how to check?

Here's you go.  Curious, how is this drive being connected to it's controller, IDE or SATA?

Turns out it was a bad power plug. I have the drive formatting as we speak.
