Is the Mozilla type Browser compatable with Norton Suite? If not, what is the best brower & software type firewall/anti virus combo best for a medium type PC ethernet hubbed purely for internet browsing? Ignoring any hardware type firewall. And SW for no pop-ups? No Adware does not seem to cut the bill. Please advise. Also any input on Winderz 2000 registry resetting or SW to monitor the registry would be appreciated. |
The other guy does not like to install Norton over the Mozilla. It asks for IE 5.1 or better. |
I use IE and have NO problems. I dont use any antivirus. My firewall is through my router adn Spybot Search and destroy helps keep the junk off. But the most important thing is using your head. If the e-mail has a (fwd.) in it, delete it. It wasnt that important if they didnt clean it up and scan it before sending it to you. Friends dont let friends Fwd e-mail. If it was really important you would have been notified. If you have to give an e-mail for online ordering, have an account set up just for that, its going to become the most spam filled crap ever, just look for the ones from your transactions and delete everything else. dont dowload "free" programs designed to "help" you. Check your control panel for add/remove programs and if any thing has the words search or bar or assistant in them delete them. If you download music, use a spyware free program such as WinMX. (avoid KAzza like the plague) If you see a pop up, NEVER buy anything from them. Seriously , only use spybot search and destroy, and please donate to them. |
Mozilla's newest idea yeah, and it works well with any virus software. Also for spyware immunization, Spybot Search & Destroy has a good immunization part of the program. |
Sometimes with IE it only takes a bad banner ad to get something started, then the trojans start coming down. It only takes a little crack in the wall to get it going, and IE has the biggest crack in the wall. However if it works for you, then it's fine. |
Got that (SpyBot) on there and within here (ARFCOM) and Snipershide it found two issues. Unless this PC is polluting the other through the firewall (router)?.... but from my understanding, it does not work that way. |
| Firefox is the way to go, Grisoft makes a good antivirus program called AVG that doesn't slow the system down near as bad as Norton 04 does and the nice thing about AVG is that is is free for personal use. free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5 |

If you're using the default setting on IE then it's only a matter of time - the automatic pre-view, automatic running of scripts will get you even if you don't open an attachment. There are plenty of threats that don't require any user participation now. The federal government has asked you to dump IE for the good of national security months ago. That's a pretty big indication that you might want to dump that slow ass crappy coded software and look at something that someone is still developing. |
I'm just looking for the best integrity. The Norton I had purchased will not install on the Mozilla browser on the other PC. I could default back to IE. Or I am willing to buy another SW firewall as I am not all that convinced on the hardware firewall. Again, do it once, do it right. |
Paul, are you serious about IE? That's messed up, I'm glad I dumped it in favor of Mozilla Firefox. It hasn't been very long since I switched, but it has been an excellent browser thus far. Boomholzer: Many of the problems I normally experience while using IE are gone. I would recommend Firefox to anyone using IE. At least try it for a month or so, and make your own decision. |

Try Opera. I use it with Norton AV Pro 2003 and my dad has Opera running just fine with the 2004 Norton internet security suite. But WindowsXP has a firewall built in. It will block lots of stuff if you have it enabled. A big part of the problem with some popups and such is with windows messaging being enabled. If you really want to cut down on the annoyances there are a lot of unnecessary services that can and should be disabled for a run of the mill home-user. I have to fix my sister's computer, which is running XP, because as she claims, it keeps dialing out to Australia in the middle of the night. I'll try to keep notes of what I disable and how I go about trying to noob-proof the whole thing. Maybe that will help me remember any odd stuff that is usually forgotten about. I'll let you know later. Gilt/Joe |
