In the two days that my antivirus expired, I think I got one that I can't seem to get rid of.

I just installed Norton Internet Security 2005 with anti-spyware.  During the full system scan, it keeps locking up on a folder that is in my Temporary Internet Files directory.  For some reason, there were about 14 different folders in that directory.  I deleted every one of them and emptied my Recycle Bin.  For some reason, there was a INDEX.DAT file there that I cannot delete because of some sharing violation.  I tried to delete it after starting in Safe Mode as well with no luck

Anyway, I figured with all of those folders gone, I would scna the computer again.  Well, it locked up again in the same directory that I just removed 10 minutes before.  How can that be if I just deleted that directory and all its files?  I went into Windows Explorer and the directory wasn't there but the Anti-Virus was scanning it and locking up there.

I restarted my computer, went to Windows Explorer and sure enough, all those directories had returned.  I think the INDEX.DAT file has something to do with it but i can't delete it because of it states there is a sharing violation.

Any ideas on what I can do to get rid of this besides reformatting?

Thanks

You can't delete the index fles AFAIK.

Run spybot or MS antispyware tool

Try safe mode if it locks up.

A longer explanation may be warranted, but I don't feel like giving it right now.

Short and sweet:

You can't delete those that way, and they are not real folders and files in the traditional sense of the word. They only appear that way in Explorer. From Internet Explorer, select tools->options. Under "Temporary Internet Files" click the "Delete Files" button. After this, try running your scan again. If it fails, it has nothing to do with the prescense of any files in the "Temporary Internet Files" directory.
