Got a new laptop with CD-RW/DVD writer. New stack of CD-RW's. If I format and write in the laptop, I can read it but not write it in the CD-RW drive on my desktop. And vice versa the desktop can write and format the disk but the laptop can read but not write if formatted from the desktop. Will say access denied and or cannot something with cd-rw format. Will show the disk as full to the amount of whats on there and no blank space. Desktop has roxio and laptop says windows using roxio technology. Both have windows-xp home service pack one. What's going on? M4-AK |

Undependable packet writing technology. You asked what is going on. Dennis Jenkins

There is a setting for closing this session. See if you left that checked. That still doesn't let you use it as a big floppy. I have never gotten it to work right, but as I understand it, you can now write to the cd -rw again, but you will only be able to read the new info you put on it. Saves time is all from having to "erase" it or format it again till it is full. |

Quoted: Undependable packet writing technology. A big plus 1. I believe Roxio and Nero use incompatible packet writing sw....Not sure what XP uses... Don't try to drag-and-drop to an RW, just "build" a compilation for the disk...doesn't really take that much longer. If you are really into data storage, get a DVD-RAM drive....works like an RW but the drive itself support packet writing AND you can get double-sided discs that rais the capacity to 9.4 Gb each for about $5. |

Unless your cdrw's are like, 7 years old or the absolute cheapest crap on the market, it shouldn't be a media issue.... Back in the day of 2x speed drives there were media issues, (also with DVDs now) but the got ironed out with firmware patches.... I'd wager it's an "arguement" between InCD (Nero), DirectCD (Roxio) and XP.....<shrug> |
Using Office Depot CD-RW. Should I try a different brand? M4-AK |
Janus gave good advice also: make sure you use the same software on both machines.... "Aftermarket" cd/dvd media can be flukey...I've found that "KHypermedia" crand form Office Max sucks the big one... Try buying just one each of say. three name-brand RW's like Sony, Memorex, Verbatim, etc. and see what happens... |
