OK.  This has happened before and I fixed it by reintalling my entire operating system.  Well I say BS to that.  It clearly is a single file that is corrupted and I would like to know which one it is (assuming I  am clearly right??)

Problem is, the dreaded red x in place of some picture or clickable item on the screen.  For example, when I enter some websights they  have a list of places you can navigate to on the left side of the screen.  All I get  NOW is a column of red xs.  Before  I could read the stuff.

Help?

Guys,

I hate to say it, but so far no dice.

Show pictures is checked (thanks Beerslayer).

If clearing the internet cache is the same thing as delete cookies and delete files I already tried it.

And I have IE6 running on Windows XP Home edition.  Thanks for the idea gaspain.

A real good example of webpages that don't display right for me is:

http://www.aresdefense.com/

Under the AREs logo are 6 red xs as far as I can tell.  Others tell me they can see the buttons there.  WTF over?

This bugs me no  end.

what I meant:

download IE6 to a folder on your hard drive.

go to add remove programs in the control panel.

single left click on IE6, it will highlight giving you the option to repair or remove.

click "repair", the program will try to fix its self.

run IE6 and see if your problem is fixed, if it is you are done- now get a beer.

if not, uninstall IE6 {MAKE SURE YOU DOWNLOADED THE NEW VERSION FIRST!!!} then re-install it.

It will work, guaranteed

Probably not a corrupt file. What ISP are you using? What AV are you using? Sometimes ISP proxies can make your system act this way. Can you right click on the X, select Save Target As or Save Picture As, save the file and view it?

I was having this exact problem a few weeks ago with 98SE.

The problem was the red x's would appear in Netscape as well, so I knew it wasn't IE6

I did a lot of un-installing of programs, and also did the repair IE6 thing for giggles.

What fixed it for me was reinstalling 98SE right over my current setup.

I didn't think in would do any good considering all the downloaded upgrades to 98SE I've done, but it worked, and all my updates are still up to date.

Just a guess. It looks like the clickable links on the website you provided is a Java Applet (fphover.class). I don't use MSIE but check your settings and see if Java or Java Script is disabled. Either that, or your browser has a problem with that particular applet.

Toggle back and forth between enable/disable (hit reload in between) and see what happens.

I know when I disabled it in Netscape the link disappeared altogether.
My PC/browser used to exhibit odd behavior with certain applets and websites. Often times I had to disable it. For myself, updating to a newer version of Netscape corrected most (but not all), of the buggy behavior.

I have just reinstalled Windows XP.  No change.  Can anyone else see the same thing I do with IE or is this a common  problem?  Please check the AREs web page and tell me if you  can see those red xs.  I can not see them, nor upload them.  My PC doesn't seem to recognize them in any way as being there.

OHHHH....shit! I know whats the problem now.

Thats a JAVA script error, because your version of XP doee NOT have java!!...because of an anti-trust suit filed against MS from SUN.

You need to d/l Java
