OK.
Slowly but surely I try to get my fucking computer back to speed.
I have 2 HDs 160 and 200 gig, both WD.
Running XP Home SP1a
The 160 gig HD shows 127 gigs and has anothe drive (E Drive with 20 gigs)
The 200 gig HD shows 127 gigs and has no additional drive
I though SP1 support more  than 127 gig HDs.
Any advice on the config?

The limit is often forced on it by the BIOS.  You can see if there's a newer version out that fixes the hard drive size problems.

Or if you just want to format the rest of the 200GB drive you can go to computer manager (right click my computer, manage) then go to the disk manager.

I want to keep the HDs whole.
Does NTFS or FAT32 make a difference?

Any more I always use NTFS, it has a few technical benifits.

Winxp bypasses the Bios for HD detection.

MS recommends NTFS for anything over 32GB.

What is the disk manager reporting?
How are the drives showing up in Device Mangaer?

C:  from the 160 gig HD shows 127
D:  From the 200 gig HD shows 127
E: from the 160 gig shows 20 gigs

Is the Disk Manager seeing the full capacity of the 200? Is it showing empty space behind D:?

No
Only see 127 gigs.  I know about the other memory because I bought the damn thing

Your IDE controller needs to be ATA100 or better to use more then 132GB. It is not a BIOS issue typically.

Check the jumpers on the back of the drive.
WDC drives should only have 1 for master or slave. If there are 2 on they are limiting the capacity.

I have a PCI card with two slots.
I used to have the 160 through the primary on the MOBO and ran the 200 through the PCI card.
This used to recognize the 200 gig, but Ihave a new MOBO and figured it would support the bigger drives and pulled the PCI card out. (this is a MOBO processor upgrade I am slogging through)
Advantages to keeping the PCI card other than the obvious, "It used to work that way?"

Had the same problem when I replaced the 120 GB drive on my wife's machine with a 250 GB.  Installing SP2 cleared it up.  Don't know whether it was an SP1 fix or an SP2 fix though.

The new mobo should pick it up (still the Intel?)

Are the drive model numbers showing in the Device Manager or is it using a generic name?
How are the IDE controllers showing up in the DM?

Trying installing the Intel INF update. It shouldn't make a differnece, but it doesn't hurt to try at this point.

Are you sure SP1 is installed? This was a known issue with XP prior to SP1. There is nothing wrong with SP2.

My OS disk is set up to SP1 (I think an auto install)
No, went with Asus, the intel I bought was the right model number, but an older serial.  Made a great frisbee when I figured that out.

No way....

Ata-100 is just the data transfer protocols/cabel specs, not the sector addressing scheme, no?

Tis true the bios will under report the drive's size.  This is for people who use DOS (stupid people).  The bios knows the REAL size of the drive, but doesn't tell older programs, but if you know the secret hand shake, the bios will give you the true drive size.  Extended Int13 is the industry term.

BTW All windows NT OSes can have a max disk size in the petabyte range. (or should)

I feel this is the cause/answer. www.experts-exchange.com/Storage/Q_21272116.html

First, ditch XP Home whenever you get the chance.  It should be called XP Light.

Second, ATA100 has nothing to do with adressing the max size of your HD.

Does the BIOS report the proper size of the HD's?  Also did this problem just appear after the recent problems you had?

After more research.. I think you and I are wrong. It would seem ata-6 (marketed as ata-100) is needed for 48bit LBA (as opposed to the 28bit LBA of all previous ATA standards)

Are you using an 80 conductor cable or a "IDEY?"

I would set master/slave just to see if that's the problem.

Strangely, I have a 440BX board running ATA33 controllers that runs a 160 gig maxtor just fine.

You do not need the PCI card, uninstall the drivers and lose it use the MB IDE… just potential problems..

What motherboard did you end up with and does it have the latest BIOS update. Are the drives seen at full capacity when you go in to the BIOS setup.

Set the drives for master or slave do not use cable select settings. There may be another jumper on the HD drive that has to do with how the system sees the capacity of the drive. Download the jumper setting for the drives if you don’t have them.

Never use Fat32 always NTFS.

Did you do a clean install… If you did do a clean install was it with SP1 included in the installation or did you do a clean install and then update to SP1a. Are sure which you did.

Make sure you are using new 80 conductor  cables that came with the HD and not old 40 conductor cables.

get sp2 now

wether or not it fixes the hard drive issue (and I think it will) it's got a ton of security updates that are Good Things to have.
