In the past year I went from being a government contractor to an actual government employee. I actually get paid less now, not much less though, but I now get a matched 401k, and for overtime I also get the option of getting comp-time instead.

What's is everyone's opinion of overtime vs comp-time? I'm doing decent enough and manage my money well enough that I prefer to have more time off than to get more money.

Looking on wikipedia it seems like getting comp-time is not legal for private sector.

Time off in lieu; compensatory time; or comp time refers to a type of work schedule arrangement that allows (or requires) workers to take time off instead of, or in addition to, receiving overtime pay. A worker may receive overtime pay plus equal time off for each hour worked on certain agreed days, such as Bank Holidays.

In the United States, such arrangements are currently illegal for private sector workers under overtime laws, but the practice is legal in the public sector.

So if you had the option would you take it?

I been taking comp time at my work instead of cash.

I can live off my base salary.... and because I don't get too many days off as a newbie, I'd rather have the time off.

Plus, people shouldn't live on OT. OT should be used to either build up savings or pay things down much quicker... but not a source of currency for being dependent on.

In my experience, Comp-Time is what your boss tells you that you will get for working unpaid overtime, but never actually lets you take.

I worked one job where I had accrued 120 hours of Comp-Time because they kept having me work overtime, but they never actually let me take any of the Comp-Time. Once I caught on I quit.

This, Comp-Time is BS I'd rather have the OT.

Where I work I can aquire the time, then choose to sell it or use it. I always take time for that reason.

Depends what my goals are at the moment, I take both regularly and my OT rate is less than a dollar an hour more than my regular rate.

I love comp time.  Especially on those pay periods when you have a shit ton of overtime.  It keeps you from getting raped on your taxes.

we aren't allowed comptime anymore.
basically what someone else said started happening.

people were racking up ridiculous amounts of comp time they couldn't use.

so under our new agreement we are no longer allowed comp time /credit hours.
