is it possible to take recorded programs from my DVR and put them on my computer?

I have done it, but the files it created were HUGE. Too big. I tried to make it work, but gave up.

If it is anything like my DVR it is possible but an extremely difficult task. The whole thing is copy protection oriented.

Firewire cable and some software that I found using google
