I've been a Comcast Internet customer for the past 10 years. During this time, with the exception of hurricane Wilma, I've never had any major issues.



Recently I was given the option, at no additional cost, to upgrade to "Blast", which is supposed to be a 50 Meg's service. Sounded great to me and I signed up for the new WiFi Router. Well, it arrived today and I'm not sure I want to install it. During some quick web research I've found that I will now be a WiFi Hotspot for my neighborhood, and that I will no longer be able to access my corporate VPN without a lot of hassle.



I already get 25 Meg as it is and at this point I'm ready to ship it back to them. Has anyone else had any issues with this? Are there work-around's for the VPN issues? Last but not least, can I really shut down the WiFi feature?

i would just call them, let them know your concerns and see if they have a workaround or fix for the vpn issues you might be having when you set it up, also make sure when they change your plan that if you had a static IP that you still have it with the upgrade, the hotspot thing i cant help with, i would suggest getting your own docsis 3 modem and avoid paying rental charges

I can't address the VPN issue but you can have Comcast turn off the Wifi.  It only takes a phone call.

I believe you can actually go in to the router settings and turn that feature off.  Too much hassle if they didn't have a way to turn it off IMO with people doing whatever they wanted on YOUR service and you looking like the culprit...

i know this part is true but i would suggest anyone else who has a wifi modem from comcast to check and see if it is now providing the hotspot even if it was off before, they just turned them on nationwide recently

Color me surprised that Comcast tries to fuck over their customers.I switched to ATT U-Verse last year when it was making it impossible for me to do my job because my modem kept malfunctioning, and they kept not wanting to take the responsibility.  Now I pay about $95(average) for U-Verse and no issues(I work from home.)

Call customer service once installed to activate your services on the new modem and tell them to disable the public wifi network while you have them on the phone.





Or do like I would do and just obtain a Docsis 3 non wireless modem from them or on your own dime and use your own wireless router.



Another choice have the modem/router activated with your services and then have them put the device in bridge mode and disable the wireless completely.  Then plug your router into port one on the comcast device.

I currently have a Comcast provided Arris TM602G/115 Cable Modem. It's hard wired to my NetGear WNDR 4500 Router. I've never had an issue of any kind with my current set-up.

You can log into that router and lock down your wifi with a password, or disable it and get your own aftermarket wireless AP.  I have the same all in one that you do...and the wireless strength sucks a big one for where i like to keep my equipment.  I bought a ubiquiti wireless ap and shut off comcast's wireless.  

Not sure why it would cause a problem with your corporate vpn.

i'd go with the upgrade.

I had my own modem for years until I dropped my Vonage service and gave it all to Comcast via their Triple Play option. My existing modem did not support VOIP.



When I did the math, it was less expensive to just rent from Comcast as opposed to purchasing the hardware myself.

I had a router I was using for wi-fi and networking the PCs in my office, the ATT router/modem works pretty flawlessly.

Several tiers are branded as "blast" - e.g. blast 20, blast 50, blast 105.  They might have changed the names so that blast now only refers to 50 - dunno, but it's the service I have.  57Mbps on average, and no problems. I'm on a pre-wifi docsis 3 motorola and run my own wifi networks, but if you have a wifi router, you can disable the free public wifi if you want.

The free wifi doesn't affect your monthly quota, and is isolated from your internal network, but can affect your max throughput if the public side is really busy when you're trying to do some stream-intensive stuff on your private side, too.

I have that level of service with Xfinity.  You have to request that the WiFi be turned off when you call in to set up the modem.  I run a Cisco WiFi solution and I could not turn their WiFi off w/o having customer support doing it remotely.

This is exactly what I'm trying to avoid. I've worked for a CLEC for the past 15 years and hate to bring any of the headaches that I deal with on a daily basis home with me.

Buy your own modem and router. I have 50Mbps Blast and use the Motorola SB6121. As long as you get a name-brand DOCSIS 3.0 and a decent Wifi router, they'll work. Setup may be more challenging, but offer a friend who's tech savvy a few beers to come over and do it if you're not comfortable with it. You'll pay off the equipment in less than a year of not paying Comcast's rental charges.

I agree fuck comcast. I had them back when I was gaming then they began throttling down the speed then to the point games we totally impossible to play. They blamed it on my equipment. I cancelled and went to the local company-BOOM! Net speeds through the roof. I kept them for 5 years until they sold and began screwing me on charges on the TV and cancelling channels then charging more. Went back to Comcast for their Boost. Worked great for about 3 weeks then it would cut out every 15-20 seconds. @ technicians came out for 4 hours dicking around with everything calling supervisors, ect. Dropped me modem off and said good luck. It worked for about 2 days. I called the new local ISP and BOOM- back to reliable fast speeds. Dropped their modem off at the store and when the lady asked me why I was cancelling I told them that their service sucked and walked out with my receipt.

$51 for internet, $42.76 for voice.  This month is $93.76.  Nowhere does it say rental for modem.   Sure they're rolling it into the bill, but for the service I'm getting(which is fantastic) I don't really care.

It's rolled into the price. You can't buy your own modem to use with AT&T U-Verse, because they use a proprietary form of VDSL.

At any rate, it works, I've had one outage in 2 years, and I've had to reboot my modem exactly 3 times in 2 years.

When I was with Comcrash, I was rebooting the modem at least once a day.

My comment of, a company should provide modems that work, however, still stands.

get your own modem and router. they charge you like 8 bucks a month to use their router anyway.

pick up a docsis 3.0 modem(recommend the motorola surfboard sb 6121 or sb 6141) and a wifi router. i have an asus rt-53 picked up last week for 50 dollars.

There are several different mfg of the DOCSIS 3 modems with wifi.

some work okay when it comes to VPN traffic, some do not.

I had zero VPN issues till I was given a new modem (same model) when trying to fix an unrelated
bandwidth issue.  then I couldn't get any vpn traffic

Their top-gun technicians had to come out and run tests.  isolated it to their modem
Seeing how I dont use their wifi (I have my own), they gave me a plain DOCSIS 3 modem (no wifi),
it's made by cisco. No more vpn issues.

so, unless you need them to supply wifi (which I don't recommend, as you don't get too many admin privelages and will probably share with the rest of the neighborhood)
ask them for a stand alone unit

$51 for internet, $42.76 for voice.  This month is $93.76.  Nowhere does it say rental for modem.   Sure they're rolling it into the bill, but for the service I'm getting(which is fantastic) I don't really care.

My comment was pointing to your experiences with comcast, not AT&T.

Some places dont let you buy modems, but comcast does. Lots of times  if you have internet with them for awhile you end up with old outdated modems that need to be replaced, which is why I always recommend buying your own. In my case my  modem will pay for itself in 6 months.  Not only is it cheaper, but it fixes the headaches of shitty modems.

Sadly most of these companies' reps on the phones know less then some of their customers. When I call them I know what I'm talking about when it comes to signals/download speeds/ and other tech issues I'm having. All you had to do was go to their local office (generally close by and they have many) and trade you modem in for a new one.

The people on the phone are only trained to deal with idiots who dont know their modem needs to be plugged in to work

some work okay when it comes to VPN traffic, some do not.



I had zero VPN issues till I was given a new modem (same model) when trying to fix an unrelated

bandwidth issue.  then I couldn't get any vpn traffic



Their top-gun technicians had to come out and run tests.  isolated it to their modem

Seeing how I dont use their wifi (I have my own), they gave me a plain DOCSIS 3 modem (no wifi),

it's made by cisco. No more vpn issues.



so, unless you need them to supply wifi (which I don't recommend, as you don't get too many admin privelages and will probably share with the rest of the neighborhood)

ask them for a stand alone unit
I already have my own  NetGear WNDR 4500 Wireless Router. Never had a problem with it and it has many features available to help keep track of my kids online activities.



Looks like I will be shopping around for a DOCSIS 3 modem of my own.  Safe to assume that I can run VOIP with it?
