A friend wants an answer to this question, and I cant find any statistical information- Do graduates from small private collleges do better or worse in finding jobs than grads from large, public universities? thanks |

It's more about who you know than what you know! But private universities have a way of "knowing people". I would think that this depends on so many other factors like the current job market in general and the location, and how the school ranks as far as that particular major goes. Some public colleges have better programs than private ones. Frats and sororities come into play because they have extensive contact lists and alumni to help place people in jobs too. Just go to a cheap school for the first two years and transfer into where you want your degree from. |

Depends on the degree. Smaller colleges have better education bet a lesser name. They can do quite well in certain regions. My advice to any college student is go to the cheapest state school you can, rock your grades and graduate exams and go to the best named university for your masters. If you have a CPA, doesn't matter where you went. If you have an engineering degree and pass your FE doesn't matter where you went. If you have a business degree, name matters. |

How you present yourself, what you have accomplished, and how much "fire in your belly" that you project makes a huge difference. The difficulty of your degree field is also tantamount. Face, it, anyone with money and time can get a college degree if they apply themself. A BA is the bare minimum today in the vast majority of fields. A BS means much more. Tack on an MBA or a M.Eng. and then you get better looking all the time. The answer is rare "this" vs. "that." The answer is "this, that, those, and them." BTW, great question. Shows you have some real moxie. |

From my experience, you could go to a 30k a year private college cause everyone in the area thinks it is the shit. Then you could move 500 - 1000 miles away and find out that few people have ever even hear of it. My advise is this. If you really can't think of anything better to spend a shit load of money on then go to a private college, but go to one that people on the North, South, East, and West coast have heard of or your wasting you fucking money. On the other hand you could spend 50k less money and get an education at a school that has a little bit of a rep for what you want to study, just so you will get a decent learn. Then get a job that pays maybe a few thousand less, if less at all, for a couple years and move on. Face it, after a couple of years in the industry generally people don't give a shit where you went to school, they are concerned with what you can do. |
A large part of it depends on the school's reputation around the industry that your friend is currently studying in. Like if I went to MIT, majored in aerospace engineering and wanted to get a job in an engineering firm, they would probably pick me over somebody who majored in aerospace engineering at Podunk University. just saying However, size isn't everything. Many small universities have excellent reputations for certain job areas. (like Case Western Reserve University's engineering department, for example). I'd recommend your friend talk to the college's department that handles job placement, etc... |
