What this poll is about doesn't really matter. What it shows however does matter. Once you buy into something, whether that be a politician, a gun, or a woman, it affects your judgement about whatever you buy into.

It's why we get "Sorry your girl lost!!" as a reply anytime someone suggest Trump might not be the best president ever. It's why a Glock fan won't ever admit the ergonomics of the G19 might be a bit outdated. It's why Hillary supporters won't ever admit their girl might be a criminal. And it's why a normal, otherwise rational gun owner would defend owning and carrying a gun that might kill you or someone else when you accidentally drop it. They wouldn't normally find that acceptable, but they have spent time and money invested in that product/politician/idea, therefore they dig in their heels rather than go through the very intellectually painful process of admitting they were wrong.

It's called Cognitive Dissonance and it's pretty prevelent if you are affected with the human condition. We all are subject to it. But if you recognize it, in yourself and others, it might help you make more rational decisions.

Yep. People hitch their wagon to stupid shit and it blinds the hell out of 'em.

Gun guys are especially bad about it.

Whats the point here? I don't get it.

ETA: Oh the people saying its not a problem. 'not a a problem' can mean a lot of things, maybe they think sig will remedy it promptly so theres no worry on their part.

Glocks have perfect ergonomics, what are you talking about?

Your conclusion is inaccurate because of inconsistent phrasing.

Based off "I own one and it isn't a problem" (or I don't), you conclude "otherwise rational gun owner would defend owning and carrying a gun"

I own guns that are not "carry safe", I just don't carry them.

No cognitive dissonance here, I have no dog in this race, just pointing out the discrepancy in your conclusion.

Funny, just last week I was thinking about posting that cognitive dissonance may be the single most important driving factor in modern human behavior.  But I was too lazy too explain it or why I thought so.

Go bucks. I bought in to them big time in the form of tuition. And yet, I'm still a terrible fan.

I've often sad that rituals like knocking on wood may in fact be a way to relieve what is essentially a form of relieving cognitive dissonance.

The current climate of total culture war over any ideas that don't fit left/right stinks of the need to relieve cognitive dissonance of those who have bought in so heavily to one "view."  As opposed to thinking issues out for themselves.

Your written explanation is incorrect. The ARFCOM poll is nonsense and not cognitive dissonance.

You are talking about "confirmation bias", not cognitive dissonance.

You should read Scott Adams blog, he has been talking about this for years.

I can see his point though. People can see and know this is a problem with the gun, on the other hand they see the gun as perfect and not flawed. Having both of these thoughts as one would be cognitive dissonance;and they try to rationalize this buy say "You are just doing this because you are

a tard " trying to rationalize their conflicting beliefs and knowledge

It's interesting, in reading about confirmation bias I just came across a new to me term Attitude Polarization. I've noticed an interesting behavior as a form of confirmation bias, but attitude polarization explains it better:

I've noticed quite often people, when presented with making a selection between to comparable items, where both choices have essentially equal merit and the choice really should be chocked up to personal preference, it's rarely left at that.

You could be choosing between Sig or HK, Mercedes or BMW, Coke or Pepsi, whatever the choice. Upon deciding, or relying on appeal to authority to decide, the really interesting shit happens. It may be a form of cognitive dissonance, confirmation bias or attitude polarization, but the side selected must suddenly be built up to be the "obvious choice" in the mind of the selector, and the other choice must be torn down and denigrated. It's as if some quark of human nature can't allow for both options to remain on equal footing or the choice made will be too easily be demonstrated to have been wrong.

I've been drinking bourbon so for 555 I'm going to say the Glock 19 is the best all around pistol, ever. I don't care if you don't agree. I'm not a fan boy, I'm a realist. I have 6 of them.
And for the record, Trump is the best president in this time we're in. Plain and simple, the only other choice was a wrinkled up hag who would continue the globalist agenda.
You neverTrumpers, liberals, PGA types, Top Secret guys, Rx retards, spongey morans can kiss my ass. As was said earlier, he wasn't our last hope, he is your last hope. See what happens if you remove the man we voted in. Go ahead, WE DARE YOU.
On an unrelated note it's my 13th wedding anniversary and the little miss has the flu. If I violated the CoC above, too f'in bad. Did I mention the bourbon is VW12 (Weller 12)?

Happy Tuesday! Sorry, no pics of the sickly little woman. I can provide pics of the VW 12 though. And for the record I will not regret this in the am.

ETA: shit, I forgot: sorry your girl lost.

Glocks ergonomics are perfect for me. To each his own, use what works best for you but don't shit on someone for using what works for them.
For post 556 I'd take a flintlock over a Sig
