I need to get a good machine.
I normally use a press to make it,but now I got a 16 year old that likes to drink it too and it just aint enough for the both of us.
My coffee roaster told me the reason that a standard drip tastes different than his is that the water doesn't get as hot.
Any of you coffee guru's use a nice machine that you could reccomend?
My sister spent $150 on hers and I can't taste the benifit...but it looks "cute".
I don't mind spending good money but I want to taste the differance.
I don't give a heck if it says ACME and looks simple.
I just want good hot coffee.
Any recomedations?
Thanks.
Andy

Get yourself a stainless, perk, I have two made by farberware. I transgressed from perk to auto drip years ago for the convience, and have gone back to perk. Its just as fast if not faster and the brew is much better. Also if you buy pre-ground keep it as air tight as possible. beans start to loose their flavor as soon as they are ground, and air is the culprit hence the vacum pack can.

I have one of these and like it a lot.  Coffee definitely tastes better when it's ground fresh.

This ain't gonna do you any good, but I got me a coffee pot from a supermarket, and tossed the 'guts' of it into the trash.

fill the pot with cold water, toss in about a lidful of grounds, add a pinch of salt and a couple of egg shells and boil the hell out of it for a while.

when it's done, add about 1/2 cup cold water and let it settle for a moment to let most of the grounds sink.

Strain through your teeth as you drink.

IMHO it beats Starbucks.

I have a Cuisinart that does the same thing, and it is worth the money.  I can't stand to drink pre-ground coffee now.  I buy the Folgers 100% Colombian beans, they are my favorite so far.

Percs are really the way to go, but if you don't have time to wait for it, any average electric will do a close job.  The key is getting one with the cone shaped bucket, not the flat bottomed one.  I have a Braun that I love.  I used to have a perc, but to only make one mug worth in it wasn't worth the time and using only a little water in it didn't seem to make as good a cup as at least a half pot.

The key to a good cup is fresh ground beans (to which I stopped doing every morning just from the hassle so I grind about a week worth and put it in an airtight container) and fresh, cold filtered water.  Having water that's room temp or has been sitting for a while is no good.

My Braun has a 'cup' setting which changes the way it brews depending on the amount of coffee you make.  1-3 cups (or 1 mug worth) is a slow brew so it doesn't splash the grounds all over the filter.  There are 2 other settings that you can test to see what comes up better for ya.

From my experience, it's not so much the machine, as the quality of the bean and the necessity of grinding your own beans.  As long as you machine isn't a piece of shit, most new ones above $50 should suffice.  Also, if you leave your coffee on the burner much longer than 20 minutes, the acid levels will begin to change and your joe will have a funny taste.  My .02=brew fresh and grind your own beans.

I too have a Cuisinart that grinds the beans just before brewing.  Ahhhh...good coffee!

I have a Braun that makes about 2.5 cups per brew, works good for me. My brother has one of those Starbuck's Coffeemaker, its nice, but at something like $250 a bit too expensive for me. As for the Braun, just drink the coffee right away after brewing and don't little it sit. I grind the frozen coffee beans just before brewing with some fresh clean water. It's best to grind the beans just before brewing because the flavor starts to deteriote when ground beans are exposed to oxygen.

Get a $15 grinder, grind fresh beans. Use boiling water and pour through a 1 cup coffee maker. Works great.....

These are really nice, they dont take up much space, & you can boil water in the michrowave. It's a very fast process.
