Local radio news said a ring was broken up yesterday.

Cultural thing? Have you ever been to one ? I understand they are really fierce and brutal......but so was a gladiator fighting a lion.....

I could never watch one...we love our chickens.

Oh chickens?  Oh...nevermind

I'd go to one, same as I'd like to see a bullfight one of these days.  Why not?  It's not exactly as if they have to prod the chickens to fight; it's natural for them.

I wouldn't go to one.

Barbarism is what it is. So is bullfighting. And dogfighting should be a capital offense.

They illegalized cock fighting here a few years back.

I worked a huge cockfight undercover in '93. Myself and two other deputies went to 3 and planned the raid. This place was in a huge metal building with one large pit in the center and two smaller ones on each side and bleachers on both sides. They even had a concession stand with some truly awesome cheeseburgers and Cokes. It was pretty brutal, but I did admittedly have fun going to them. I had more fun when the raid went down and we were on the inside. The badge on my neck chain and the 1911 in my shoulder rig came out, and it was all pretty cool. Ended up citing over 400 people for spectators and contributing to the delinquency of minors (lots of little kids there) and charging about a dozen with felony cockfighting. It made national news and Paul Harvey!

A cock ring?

No.  No, I don't want anything to do with that.

I would go if it was legal.

I have been to several cock fights and a few dozen dog fights.

It is a fun event to go to.

Do so at your own risk.

ETA: These were not getto dog fights or cock fights.

Lots of money an time is invested into these animals an most fights are not to the death.

Noone wants to fight a 50K dog to death.

I have seen some 100K dogs.

ETA2: I went to one at a ranch in wyoming saw 500K+ fights.

I'd never let my cock fight.

I went to one when I was a kid (about 1961).  Very bloody.  Lots of crazy people.

Never been to one but my wife was walking to a coffee shop a few years ago when we lived on the bad side of town and found a bunch of flyers blowing in the wind all over the street near it advertising a bar with cockfights and other gambling in bad english and spanish. Some other people at the shop had grabbed some as well,no one could believe they were stupid enough to print up flyers and leave them on a main street. A cop stopped by and took some of them but I never heard anything on the news or anything about it after that but I hope they shut the place down.

Never been but I'd go to one in a heart beat , those chickens are treated better than the ones we eat any day of the week !

It's definitely a cultural thing. I've been to a couple of them, but I was pretty young when I did go. I remember there being lots of money floating around and there were tons of people there.

Would definitely go, if legal.

Wasn't that big of a deal when I was young. Knew a lot of people that had a few birds in their yard. Actually had a girl bring in a couple of birds to school (I was in 5th or 6th grade at the time) and show us how they trained them. Would have no issues with going to one now.

I'm proud of you fellas. You all kept your head on a swivel, and that's what you gotta do when you find yourself in a vicious cock fight.

Saw a couple on tv in the Dominican Republic. They give them more coverage than espn gives a ufc event. I only seen one live not really my thing they attack each others eyes pretty gruesome.

It is a cultural thing, mainly Hispanic.

Oh, you meant chickens....... carry on.
8/20/2011 9:35:28 PM EDT

I wouldn't mind going to one. Brutal? Sure, but have you seen the conditions the chickens we eat are raised in?

I'd go to one, and even place a few bets. Assuming both were legal of course.
8/20/2011 9:39:44 PM EDT
[#32]
Nobody is making the chickens fight.

They will do that on their own, and they will fight YOU to get away from you to attack another rooster.

That being said, adding weapons into the mix may or may not agree with you.

I have raised them, trained them, and cared for injured ones after fights.

I've never been to a fight or participated in that end of it. Not on any moral grounds or anything it just never really worked out that way. I worked for a guy that traveled all over fighting them back when it was legal in the US. Was a decent job for a kid in school.

It's still legal in the PI, and the last time I was there I didn't get a chance to go, although we had a few roosters that were going after each other in the yard behind the house.

Its a Latin American thing, the region, not the people.

Well, in some cases the people too.

Yeah, same thing can be said about fighting dogs too........ Michael Vick should have tried that logic!!

Up until a few years ago it was legal here in Louisiana.  I've never been to a cockfight myself, but I do know people that had birds and participated in them.

Not a big deal to me, it's a chicken.  And I've known plenty people to take the dead birds and make gumbo out of them.

LC

ETA:  It was (and probably still is) a pretty big sport among Cajuns.

The University of South Carolina are called the Gamecocks for a good reason. It was a very popular sport here for many years. The senators used to fight them inside the Statehouse while it was in session. The type of birds used in these fights will go a country mile to kill another one. They are some of the most vicious and aggressive animals you will ever see. People have been attacked and severely injured just walking through their territory. Mean sons a bitches. Lot's of folk's around these parts still fight them.

IIRC they have a dedicated cock fighting channel on cable TV in the PI. There's a cock fighting arena in just about every baranguy you pass through. Great fun!

Used to be popular here a LONG time ago.
Haven't heard of any in 25 years or so.

Know an old man who still has his little case with spurs in it.

If it's still around, I suspect it's with Latinos. I have heard it mentioned.
Sort of like all the pitbull rings are mostly frequented by blacks.
So, certainly a cultural aspect to it.

They show it on the local cable where I live.  SWMBO's brother-in-law raises Texas roosters for this, and makes A METRIC SHITLOAD of money doing it, compared to most Filipinos I know.

I've been asked to go to a Sabong (cockfight) a few times, but with our new "obey our laws wherever you are" type of Federal law enforcement these days, I wouldn't admit to going to one.

Roosters will naturally try to kill another rooster.  That's the way it is, and I don't get too worked up over it.  I -DO- like any excuse to have a few beers with my friends, though!

I watched cocks armed with 1" short knives fight one time. It was fascinating but at the same time it was just horrible.

Edit:
My response after viewing the impromptu match: : Jimmy, that made me fucking sick. Excuse while I go throw up.

I can imagine the thrill of arresting a bunch of old latino or hillbilly guys and families for having fights with chickens!  Sir!  Please step away from the cock!

It's like Crockett and Tubbs all over again!

Do you use Sonny Burnett as your UC name?  How do you build a cover as a guy who loves cocks?

My brother use to handle and raise roosters to fight.
Been to many fights. Not really my cup of tea.

Kentucky?  Know of a couple around here...

Lots of houses (well, trailers) around here have chicken houses where the chickens are tied up with their own little house––usually plastic barrels.  Gee, I wonder what those chickens are for?
