I remember reading an article by Herb Caen about a guy who got a picture of a ticket in the mail for 50 bucks. So the guy took a picture of 50 bucks and sent it in. So then he got a picture of some handcuffs in the mail. So then he........paid the fine. Herb Caen said it was true.

I received one of those at a different intersection in LA.  I watched the light as I entered the intersection and it was yellow.  I then received a ticket and photo showing my car at the white line and the yellow counter at 0, and the red light was active.

I tried to get the hardware/software design on the system, but the city only sent a users manual.  This guy had a good idea using the video camera.  I almost timmed the lights, but didn't have time.

[beer] to this guy

I'm glad to see someone is successfully fighting back.  My wife was driving on Independence Blvd in Charlotte, NC, and a cop was directing traffic around an accident.  The red light camera "caught" her in the intersection when the light went to red.  She tried to fight it since she was obeying the law and she had three witnesses with her that were more than willing to return to Charlotte for an excuse to go shopping again.  I talked to the city police and they didn't even have a procedure to use to fight the ticket.  According to NC law, if your picture is taken, you are guilty.  In NC, the state courts have affirmed that you do not have a right to a hearing or trial for red light camera tickets or several other types of fines.  That state is only a 20 minute drive from my home, so I'm worried about the same Constitutional disregard spreading to my area.z

There are hundreds like this guy, all fighting their own war of resistence in their own ways....My hat is off to him!!!

Hey if you receive a ticket in the mail and ordered to pay a fine with no chance to defend yourself aren't you being denied due process?

So THATS why they wanna ban .50 cals

Good for him.  Those things are like click it or ticket.  They claim the programs are designed to save lives (for the children) but they are out there to boost revenue.

I hate the idea of photo enforcement.  What a crock!!

The NMA has been offering this "wager" for over a year and so far, there have been no takers.  This needs to get more attention!

This is from the National Motorists Association, which is pretty much the GOA of traffic laws:

http://www.motorists.org

NMA LAUNCHES $10,000 TICKET CAMERA CHALLENGE
(An open letter to all communities in Virginia and Maryland and Washington DC that employ red light ticket cameras)

The National Motorists Association is wagering $10,000 to prove that our engineering approach can cut red light violations better than any ticket camera installation.

We have spent more than a year exposing the unethical exploitation associated with the use of red light ticket cameras. For example, we know that counterproductive government policies and government actions have largely created the increase in red light violations. This is not speculation, vague suspicion, or an educated guess. This is fact.

The use of ticket cameras to reward incompetent (if not outright devious) public agencies for failing to meet their professional responsibilities is a travesty that demands correction. Proper signal timing, better signal design, and improved intersections are the real answers to the red-light-violation problem.

The apparent increase in red light violations is largely the result of a 20-year pattern of deliberately changing the standards for the timing of yellow lights. This is an engineering problem, not an enforcement issue. There is ample and convincing evidence, right in Northern Virginia, that increasing the yellow light duration dramatically and permanently reduces red light violations. Despite this evidence, these ticket camera cities are permitting unsafe and dangerous conditions to persist, while profiting from preventable red-light violations.

A more cynical perspective might suggest that this two-decade process of shortening yellow lights was done deliberately to create a "red light running crisis" and thereby foster public acceptance of ticket cameras.

Our claims have been met with feeble excuses that try to ignore the hard evidence that proves the "epidemic of red light running" is the product of poor traffic engineering policies. This is not a law enforcement problem.

Today we say to the communities that employ ticket cameras, "Let's put traffic engineering solutions to the test." Here's our challenge.

Show us any red light ticket camera intersection that still has high numbers of red light violations (there are plenty to choose from) and we will guarantee a MINIMUM of a 50 percent reduction in red light violations through the application of engineering solutions.

[red]If our recommendations fail to meet our minimum goal of a 50 percent reduction in red light violations, we will pay the community $10,000 to be used on any traffic safety program or project it chooses. [/red]But, if we prove the validity of our contentions, the community will employ our engineering based recommendations at other troublesome intersections, and scrap its ticket camera program. What do you have to lose, other than your ticket camera revenue?

Personally, I think the best way to get rid of traffic cameras:

Find out what make/model car your mayor, state senator, governor or whatever drives.

Rent the same model of car for a day.  Or borrow one from your friend.  Replace the license plates with ones that are the same as your local politicians'.  Hire a stripper or escort or other woman to dress up in some sexy lingerie and have her drive around running red lights and speeding in front of the traffic camera.

I'd like to see how these politicians like it when theif wife opens the mail and finds photos of scantily clad women driving around in the "mayor's" car.  Explain that one, assholes!

There's a link from his site to another page that describes how a guy was about to use the red light camera as a speed trap defense.  per CA law, though.  It was an interesting bit.  If a car is moving at less than 15 mph it seems that the cameras won't trigger.

Fight the things as often as you can, or they will proliferate.

Zoom,
Wasn't it Charlotte also where, shortly after installing the cameras, a whole group of people in a funeral procession got tickets for being in the intersection on a red light?
