About a month ago my boss(Sheriff) came out with a memo that stated we are now allowed to carry any model of the following manufacturers as long as it is either in .45cal or 9mm:  H & K, Beretta, Glock, & Smith & Wesson.  Another stipulation was that the barrel length could be no smaller than 31/2" and no longer than 5".  You can mix and match weapons(ie., carry back-up on & off duty).  What would you get?[:D]

Maybe a 19 and a 17

I would go with the Glocks.  I do not have Glocks in those calibres, but the ones I have, have always given me dependable service.

I agree..
I personally like H&K over Glock. Just my opinion....

Wierd...  Hk, Beretta, Glock, *&*, but not Sig?
I wonder why...

I'd go HK or Beretta, but that's just because I'm a DA/SA person.  Glocks are fine, but I like hammers.  Also, I'd never buy anything *&* after they sold out.

.45 or 9mm, and size of gun are a personal preference.

Of course the best advice is always to go to a range and try them all.  They are all reliable manufacturers.

It's funny how people prefer Glock over Sig.
I've only fired (regularly) three pistols in my life, my uncle's sherrif-friend's Glock 9mm, my father's cheap unknown 9mm, and a Sig .357.
I'm not a pistol person, but the glock I was not impressed with, while the Sig felt like it was a magical 3rd hand on my body.  I even seem to prefer 9mm over the fairly bigger punch that the .357 offers, but I cannot be any more impressed with this pistol.  If glocks were 300 bucks, I can see why people would like them.  But for nearly the same price, Sig has my vote tenfold.  Just the Jew's lowly .02 in this matter...

Because Sigs are overpriced, overcomplicated pieces of Euro-Trash that are difficult to shoot well under stress! [:D] Just kidding!

I prefer the undercomplicated, reasonably priced Euro-Trash: Glock.  Not kidding.

Buy what appeals to you personally, fits your hand well, that's easy for you to understand the mechanics of, seek training, practice, practice and then practice so that you can...

Use your pistol to fight to your LEGP AR15!
When you absolutely, positively can only pick one weapon, it's got to be an AR15!  [}:D]

I like my Glock 17.  Being LE, you can get "intended capacity" magazines for a decent price.  All Glocks are the same, so I'd say a 21 would be good, if 45 is what you want.

If you want traditional double-action(unlike Glocks safe-action) or double-action/single action, and having an option for a traditional safety and/or decocker, the H&K USP's(9mm or 45) would be the way to go.  Though, I don't have one yet so I'm no expert.  I'm looking at getting a USP45, but that's after I've collected a few other guns.

I don't like having a safety on the slide(might pull on the slide and engage the safety during high-stress situation, not that this has ever happened, but it could), so the Beretta 92's are out, unless you want a double-action-only 9mm.

S&W is not an even an option.

So to summarize, a Glock or H&K USP would be my choice.  I know compact Glocks can accept full size Glock magazines, so if you are wanting a back-up gun, Glock is the way to go.  I don't know if compact H&K's do this, besides they don't make their compacts as small a Glock sub-compact(are you even allowed this small a back-up if a back-up at all?).

Sorry guys, Sig is an option too!  My mistake!  It looks like alot of guys on our department(350+) are going to go to the Glock in 45acp or the Sig in the same caliber.  Hardly anybody here & on my department is considering the Beretta.  The only exception is that new one they have out, I think it's called the 9000s in 9mm?  The rounds we will be going to are the:  Winchester "Ranger SXT"/ 230grn(45acp) & 147grn(9mm).

Well the Beretta will function more reliably with a sound suppressor than will the Glock. Either can be converted to full auto with drop in parts no modifications to the gun. That 147Gr bullet will be nice and quiet and subsonic. If you plan on practicing your shooting go with the Glock 45. If you plan on being a typical cop who shoots one box of ammo a year go with the Glock 9mm cause you can get 33rnd mags for it, and you will most likely need quantity over quality.

Most recent cop shooting here 27 shots fired at perp 5 cops shooting one with shotgun and perp was released from hospital in 2 days.

Thanks for the suggestions guys I really appreciate it!  Stay Safe!

i would choose a sig p220 and a mini glock for backup. both just to tick off the anti-glock and the anti-sig people. haha [:D]

pistol loving lib out...

but as far as what mantracker listed as suggested manufacture, i would go with the beretta elite II in 9mm. 147 grain hi-shocks.

Glock 21 and 30 for 45 cal. and Glock 17 and 19 for 9mm. For the money can't beat Glock. Reliable and mags are interchangeable.
