"The more I read about SARS, the more I'm coming to wonder if it is a
bioweapon rather than natural.
Sure seems to have some "nice" characteristics for a weapon:
* Recent analysis suggests that like the fatality rate of SARS is more like
15% than the 5-6% originally calculated, with a 50% fatality rate among
those over 65.
* Successful treatment requires a major commitment of medical resources on
each case, with the possibility of "system overload" if large number of
cases develop.
* It is easily transmitted by both airborne and
surface/skin-to-skin-to-nose/mouth vectors.
* It is "highly persistent" outside of the body. Germs can survive on
surfaces and transmit the disease for as much as four days.
* In its early stages it "mimics" common cold and flu symptoms, reducing
the likelihood that it will be treated before it become severe.
This disease "came out of nowhere" from China and the Chinese government
seems to have made a major effort to hide the severity and extent of the
infection pattern. Original cases of SARS seem to have developed "in the
middle of nowhere" of rural China.
Add this all together, and it makes me wonder if what we are dealing with is
an accidental release from a PRC bioweapons development lab.
It could be that I've just hung around with "the wrong sort of people" too
much, but I'm developing kind of an "uncomfortable itch" about SARS."
