[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Cherokee, Compass, or Patriot? (Page 1 of 2)

| Father (65yo) is looking for a new car. Coming from a Taco and a Camry. Going to sell them and get either a new 2014 Cherokee, or a used Compass or Patriot. What say the hive? He is set on a Jeep. Doesn't want a Wrangler. How are the new Cherokees? Hes a no frills type of guy so all he really wants is 4wd, doesn't need to be fancy trim. |

The jeep hate is strong. If the Cherokee were an XJ replacement, that would be one thing. It's not. Jeeps are supposed to be inexpensive, no frills, with the majority of your money going towards buying a solid frame, bombproof reliable engine, and suspension and transmission systems that are easily worked on and do the job. Every one of the three vehicles in the thread title are the functional equivalent of buying a luxury sedan and putting on a bumper sticker that says, "I liked to go camping once a year when I was younger." |

OP sounds like a troll, but I'll give him a chance.
What does dad plan to use the new car for? Why is he getting rid of the yotas? If he is a "no frills" guy, why does he want a new car? Also, this: Quoted:
You do know all of those fugly pieces of shit are the same car, right? Emphasis on car. |

I have a 2014 base Grand Cherokee. ~ 8 months later and I still love it! That never happens LOL, might be one of my all time favorite cars. The Grand Cherokee is far superior to the vehicles being discussed. Its on the list of vehicles with major reliability issues right now, Jeep is surviving on their brand name reputation alone right now. If they don't get things straightened out soon even that won't be enough to save them.

If he's set on Jeep get him a base Grand Cherokee. Or the Cherokee, but not the Patriot or Compass... You do know all of those fugly pieces of shit are the same car, right? Emphasis on car. I don't think this is accurate. IIRC, the Cherokee is based on an Alfa Romeo platform, and the Compass and Patriot use an older platform that pre-dates FCA. |

My wife bought a "Girly Jeep" Compass new in '08. She loves it. Me, meh. It has an odd transmission & small engine but goes down the road fine & typically gets 26-28 mpg. The 4 wheel drive is good enough for snow covered roads. I do change the oil & filter every 2500 miles as it only holds 4.5qts. We have had no unusual issues with this vehicle. It has nearly 115k miles on it and I would not hesitate to drive it across the country any time of the year. |

You realize you are going from the 2 most reliable vehicles to the least reliable, right? You have to be crazy to buy a Jeep/Chrysler product....they are junk. |

I'm kind of interested in seeing real world reviews of the Renegades myself.
Not sure if I'd buy one, but you can get them with a manual and 4x4 and don't have to get it loaded to the gills with crap you don't want either. Expected to be able to get around 30 mpg, and while the little turbo 4 won't be anything to wow you, it should be powerful enough for a decent daily driver in the NE winters. |

Quoted: I owned a jeep compass..worst vehicle I ever bought and I pretty much gave it away to get rid of it. they are an entry level suv and it shows. Everything about them is cheap..run don't walk away.. Like Striker says, stay away |

Consumer Reports. And I am not your 'sweetie'
PS- I own a Jeep, would like to have bought a new GC but the reliability reports are out there, Consumer reports and other sites. Maybe you did get a 'good' one but I know people with some of these cars and they are tired of recalls and service work. |
